Abstract
A permitted explosive, of increased specific energy and safer against firedamp, comprises an organic nitrate sensitizing component and a ternary inorganic salt mixture comprising ammonium chloride, an alkali metal nitrate, and an alkaline earth metal carbonate, in the approximate molar ratio 5:3:1. The sensitizing component may be glycol nitrate, nitroglycerine, PETN, or mixtures thereof. Nitrates and carbonates specified are NaNO3, KNO3, CaCo3, MgCO3, BaCO3, and dolomite. For a positive oxygen balance in the explosive, more alkali metal nitrate is added, with or without ammonium chloride. The composition may also include combustible substances, for example guar flour, wood wool, or metal soaps, together with more oxygen-yielding salt. Inert substances which may be included are common salt, alumina, silicates, and iron oxide.
