Abstract

A sterile aqueous solution of hydroxyethyl cellulose having a Brookfield relative viscosity of 10-100,000 centipoises which is substantially free of fibre-forming particles may be prepared by mixing hydroxyethyl cellulose with water in the presence of b -propiolactone until gelation occurs. The gel is clarified, i.e. rendered substantially fibre-free, by centrifuging or by filtration.ALSO:The invention comprises a sterile aqueous solution of hydroxyethyl cellulose which has a Brookfield relative viscosity of 10-100,000 centipoises and is substantially free of fibre-forming particles. The aqueous hydroxyethyl cellulose solution is used as a base for ophthalmic pharmaceutical preparations. The examples describe aqueous sols and gels containing hydroxyethyl cellulose with (a) pilocarpine nitrate, sorbitol, sodium citrate, disodium salt of ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid, chlorbutanol and b -propiolactone; (b) dexamethasone phosphate disodium, sorbitol, sodium citrate, disodium salt of ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid, benzalkonium chloride, polyoxyethylene sorbitan mono-oleate and creatinine; (c) dexamethasone phosphate disodium, neomycin sulphate, sodium citrate, disodium salt of ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid, benzalkonium chloride, polyoxyethylene sorbitan monooleate, creatinine, and sodium bisulphite; (d) dexamethasone phosphate disodium, sulphisoxazole, diethanolamine, sodium thiosulphate, sodium bisulphate, sodium citrate, disodium salt of ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid, creatinine, sorbitol, benzalkonium chloride and polyoxyethylene sorbitan monooleate.
