Abstract
An antibacterial composition comprises (1) a diphenyl ether having the formula <FORM:1090020/A5-A6/1> wherein X is halogen and X1 is H or halogen, and (2) at least one compound selected from (i) polyhalogenated salicylanilides and (ii) polyhalogenated carbanilides. Preferred components are (1) 4, 2\sv, 4\sv-trichloro-2-hydroxy diphenyl ether, 4,4\sv-dichloro-2-hydroxy diphenyl ether; (2) (i)i 3,5-dibromosalicylanilide, 3,5,4\sv-tribromosalicyl-anilide; (2) (ii) 3,4,4\sv-trichlorocarbanilide. The compositions find application in detergent compositions wherein the surface active agent may be an anionic, nonionic, cationic or amphoteric detergent or a soap.
