Abstract

A foundry moulding-sand composition comprises (a) a particulate refractory material, (b) aqueous sodium silicate solution, (c) 0.25-5% wt. glucose based on weight of (a), and (d) a solid mild oxidizing agent. (a) may be e.g. silica, zircon, chrome or olivine sand or a sillimanite. In (b), the weight ratio of SiO2 to Na2O is preferably 2.0-3.3, viscosity being 84-120 DEG Twaddle; the weight of the sodium silicate used is from 1% to less than 5% based on weight of (a). (c) may be produced in situ during hot setting or casting by the action of heat on a polysaccharide containing an anhydroglucose unit, e.g. dextrin or sucrose in the presence of MnO2 catalyst. (d) is inert towards the sodium silicate, and at temperatures met during casting completely decomposes the glucose, and may be MnO2 or Fe2O3, and preferably is not more than 50% by weight of the glucose. Additionally may be present finely divided CaCO3 not exceeding 50% by weight of the glucose. The compositions may be set by heat and/or CO2 or SO2. After the metal-casting operation the moulds and cores are completely broken down to small friable aggregate by vibration in conventional manner.
