Abstract
An article of iron or steel is electrolytically descaled while immersed in a bath of anaqueous solution comprising by weight at least 2%, preferably more than 10%, of one or more Na or K salts of H2SO4 or HNO3, 0.1 to 10% of a soluble fluoride, e.g. NaF, KF, KHF2, NH4F or SnF2, and 0.25 to 10% of an organic substance capable of forming complex ions with metal ions removed from the article surface, e.g. citric or tartaric acid or Na or K salt thereof. The pH of the solution may be adjusted from 3 to 13 by adding H2SO4, HF and/or HNO3, or NaOH and/or KOH. D. C. may be passed with the article as cathode or anode, or A. C. may be passed with the article as one or both electrodes, or current may be passed indirectly through the article disposed between an anode and a cathode.
