Abstract
In a process of anodically brightening a workpiece of aluminium or aluminium alloy, the electrolyte consists of an alkaline aqueous solution containing an alkali metal hydroxide, e.g. sodium hydroxide and gluconic acid or glucoheptonic acid or an alkali metal salt thereof e.g. the sodium salt thereof. Electrolysis is preferably carried out at a temperature of 40-80 DEG C. and with a current density of 20-390 amps/sq. ft., the electrolyte containing 0.2 - 5.0 wt% of alkali metal hydroxide and above 0.01 wt% e.g. 1.5-10 wt%, of gluconic or glucoheptonic acids or alkali metal salts thereof. The electrolyte may also contain an oxidizing agent e.g. a nitrate, nitrite, chlorate, perborate a hydrogen peroxide or mixture thereof; a sequestering agent, e.g. ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid or nitrilo-triacetic acid; an alkali metal salt of sulphuric acid hydrofluoric acid, acetic acid or a poly carboxilic acid, e.g. malonic or oxalic acids; an aluminate or a sugar. The current may be intermittent, i.e. being interrupted for periods not greater than 2 secs.
