Abstract

1,082,380. Vehicle steering arrangements. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Jan. 31, 1966 [Feb. 13, 1965], No. 4089/66. Heading B7H. A steering wheel 12, fixed to a spindle 9, is movable both along its own axis and about the parallel axis of a steering shaft 2, which is connected to the spindle 9, by a chain or belt 19 engaging gear-wheels 15, 17 on the spindle and the steering shaft, and to the steerable wheels of a vehicle. In Fig. 3 the spindle 9 is connected by alternative chain drives 19, 19a to the steering shaft 2 mounted in a housing 6 which is rotatable through 180 degrees about the axis of the shaft 2. A control 20 secures either gearwheel 17 or 18 to the shaft 2 to determine the steering ratio and a clamping device 22 passes through a slot in the end of the housing 6 whereby the vertical position of the steering wheel is adjustable. The spindle 9 is axially slidable in the gear-wheels 15, 16 and the housing 6 against the resistance of a spring 13 to reduce injury to an occupant of the vehicle striking the steering wheel. The axial position of the steering wheel is adjustable by moving a collar, which is lockable by a handle 14, on the end 11 of the spindle 9.
