Abstract

1,018,485. Adjustable steering columns. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. July 8, 1964 [July 29. 1963], No. 28242/64. Heading B7H. A stub shaft 12 carrying the steering wheel 10 of a motor vehicle is connected to the steering shaft 26 by a universal joint 28 and is journalled in a housing 20 which is adjustable about horizontal pins 25 carried by the steering column 40 upon disengaging toothed members on the housing 20 and the column 40. A horseshoe member 75 pivotable about a pin 85 in the housing 20 is formed with teeth 81 urged by a spring 89 into engagement with toothed segments 66 on a U-shaped member 48 bolted to the column 40. By means of a lever 97 projecting from the horseshoe member 75 the teeth 81 may be disengaged from the segments 66 and engaged in a new position, a counterbalance spring 100 supporting the steering wheel and stub shaft during adjustment.
