Abstract

1,081,370. Producing electrical components; jointing by stamping; jointing by forging. UNITED-CARR Inc. Dec. 21, 1964 [April 8, 1964], No. 51866/64. Headings B3A, B3H and B3Q. [Also in Division H2] The tail of an electric contact is formed from sheet metal which is initially bent into a U- shape and has a round cross-sectioned wire inserted to the bottom of the U. The arms of the U are subsequently bent around the wire so that the free ends substantially meet along a seam, and this is then inserted into a die which compresses it until the assembly has a square cross-section with four relatively sharp corners which form good contact with a wire wrapped around it. If the inserted wire is of soft copper this deforms with the sheet metal so that the final shape of the sheet metal is square both on its inside and outside surfaces. However, if the wire is for example piano wire, then the inside shape of the deformed sheet metal conforms to the original round cross-section of the piano wire, which may subsequently be removed. With the use of the removable piano wire the forming of the tail may be carried out automatically and the contacts moved from one station to the next, each station having a piece of piano wire with a painted free end to receive the partially formed contacts. In alternative embodiments (e.g. the embodiment shown in Fig. 10) the arms of the U, need not be folded completely round the wire 42 and the specially shaped moving die 49 having a projection 48 deforms the contact so that it has the required four sharp corners but is open to the cone along one of its sides.
