An unlagged shell boiler or hot water heater 4 is surrounded by a spaced lagged casing 1, air for combustion entering the casing through louvres 2 and passing round three sides of the shell 4 before entering the eye of the forced draught fan 6 to be discharged through duct 7 to the burner windbox. Boilers having two axially aligned shells may be incorporated in the same casing or be in separate casings through which interconnecting pipes pass.
