Abstract

1,079,237. Boring earth; wells; artificial islands. MANNESMANN A.G. Nov. 5, 1965 [Nov. 6, 1964], No. 46906/65. Headings E1F and E1H. A protector for a sub-aqueous wellhead (14) comprises a self-supporting tube (3) having its lower end fixed in the water bed 1 and its upper end above the water level. The tube is at least 1 metre in diameter, has anchorages (7) (7a) for well pipe and may carry a landing platform for helicopters. The wellhead may have pipes (12) connected to supply pipes (11) running along the water bed. The tube has partitions (4) (5) which may form a tank, and has a plug (16) or floor at its lower end. A joint (20) adjacent the lower end of the tube and an associated closure (21) permit removal of the upper part of the tube, and the formation of a working chamber on the bed. A scouring tube (22) may be provided to facilitate removal of the tube (3). In order that the thickness of the wall of the tube (3) remains constant throughout its length sections of the tube are made of materials having different elastic limits.
