Abstract
1397470 Boring earth &c BROWN & ROOT INC 27 Feb 1973 [9 Feb 1973] 9495/73 Heading E1F A drilling rig 24 for drilling a bore hole at the base of an upwardly-projecting hollow pile 22 of an off-shore platform 12 so as to enable the pile tQ be driven further beneath the submerged surface 16, comprises a derrick, a tubular projection 40 suspended below the derrick for telescoping with a pile, and rig support means (84), Fig 4 (not shown), engageable with the pile to support the rig on the pile in a free-standing manner. The rig 24 is lowered from a barge on to the pile by means of a sling 30, and dulling equipment on a deck of the rig is powered from the barge by means of a line 34. The rig is supported on the pile by means of an annular member (84) fixed to the top end of the projection 40. The projection takes the form of a sleeve having a flared lower end and the sleeve is provided with a hole (78) in its wall to receive a conduit (80) which communicates with the interior of the pile to provide an outlet for drilling fluid, and also, in the case of rotary drilling, to impede turning of the rig on the pile. The borehole may alternatively be made by jetting or with the use of a down-the-hole turbine drill. Annular shims 82 are provided on the interior of the sleeve 40 to stabilize the rig. After removing the rig from the pile, the pile may be driven into the ground in any suitable manner and the pile permanently set. The pile may be under-reamed so that the pile, with the rig mounted thereon, penetrates further into the ground during drilling and is thereafter set.
