Abstract

1386174 Continuous casting VEREINIGTE OSTERREICHISCHE EISEN - UND STAHLWERKE AG 1 June 1972 25663/72 Heading B3F [Also in Division F4] In a continuous casting plant, a process for separating non-metallic inclusions from hot liquid metal, e.g. low carbon steel, in a tundish 3 divided into compartments 5 and 6, compartment 6 containing the molten metal under a layer of slag 15 and having a pouring nozzle 18 feeding a water-cooled mould 19 comprising: (1) supplying the metal to compartment 5; and (2) guiding it through one or more cranked passages 9 with upturned exit or exits 10 disposed 3-30 cm. below the metal surface so as to form a wave 12 in the slag, the speed of the stream being 3À5-31 cm./sec. when the distance is 3cm. and 17À5-45 cm./sec. when the distance is 30 cm. The slag layer 15 receives and retains the inclusions, mainly alumina particles, as they reach the surface. The passage may be formed in part by stepping upwardly the base of the tundish beyond the wall 4 (Fig. 3). In a modification, Fig. 5, the wall is replaced by a square-sectioned inlet tube 38 resting on the tundish base and having a shoulder 39 formed with one or more passages 40. The shoulder may be formed on two opposite sides (Fig. 10) or the inlet tube may be of round section (Fig. 7). The tundish may be U- shaped in plan (Fig. 9) with the inlet tube in the web and a pouring nozzle in each leg.
