Abstract
1,068,970. Gas insulated cables. CENTRAL ELECTRICITY GENERATING BOARD. Nov. 10, 1965 [Nov. 19, 1964], No. 47225/64. Addition to 967,012. Heading H1A. In a compressed gas insulated cable an inne<SP>r</SP> conductor is located within an outer concentric support by means of tubular spacing members of solid dielectric material so shaped that in any radial plane, the length of the path through the solid dielectric material is small compared with that through the gas. As shown, stranded conductor 10 of Cu or Al is surrounded by conductive screen 11 of metal tape or expanded conductive plastic and insulating layer 12. Spacing members 13, of polyethylene or polypropylene, are shaped so that the portions of the periphery of adjacent members are in close contact and the remaining portions fit closely to layer 12 and to an outer layer 14 of lapped dielectric material, e.g. polycarbonate or polyethylene terephthalate which in turn is surrounded by screen 15 of conductive tapes. Tubular members 13 are preferably arranged helically with a long lay. The gas insulation is sulphur hexafluoride with or without nitrogen at a pressure of between 200 and 500 p.s.i. The cable may be terminated as described in Specification 967,012 or by means of a series of prefabricated toroidal capacitors.
