Abstract
1315488 Laminated films FISONS INDUSTRIAL CHEMICALS Ltd 12 Aug 1970 [29 Aug 1969] 43039/69 Heading B5B A process for the production of laminated films containing a foamed layer and at least one unfoamed surface layer comprises simultaneously extruding, preferably through a double or triple concentric ring die, a thermoplastic resin containing a blowing agent to form a foamed film and at least one unfoamable thermoplastic resin contiguous with at least one face of the foamed film. Preferably unfoamed layers are extruded contiguous with each face of the foamed layer. Suitable thermoplastic resins are the polymers or copolymers of α-olefins, polyamides, polyesters, polyacrylates and polymers and copolymers of styrene and vinyl chloride. The unfoamed layers are preferably formed of the same resin and the foamed layer is preferably of the same resin as at least one of the unfoamed layers. During extrusion of the films the temperature of the extruder barrel containing the foamable thermoplastic resin is such that the blowing agent is completely decomposed, the pressure in the barrel however being sufficient, suitably greater than 100 kg/cm.<SP>2</SP>, to prevent cell formation before the resin is extruded from the die. Examples relate to the use of polyethylene as foamed and unfoamed layers in tubular films, the foamed layers being produced by using azodicarbonamide as blowing agent.
