Abstract
1,060,251. Tufting machines. ELLISON TUFTING MACHINERY Ltd. Nov. 30, 1964 [Sept. 7, 1964], No. 36556/64. Heading D1G. A multi-needle tufting machine comprises means for feeding yarn at constant speed to each needle, and a plurality of yarn tensioners each adapted to act on an individual yarn or on a plurality of yarns between the yarn supply and the yarn-feeding means, the tensioners being controlled by a patterning device to produce normal pile with normal tension, and short loop pile with increased tension to cause slipping of the yarn with respect to the yarnfeeding means. The yarns pass over a plate S positioned between the source of supply and a pair of spacedapart constant-speed feed rollers 41, 42, the axis of roller 42 being displaceable in a slot 43 to vary the bight of the yarn thereon. Tension is applied to the yarns by comprising the latter between plate S and the feet carried by the piston rods of respective pneumatic cylinders T, the supply of compressed air to which is controlled by a pattern drum. The application of pressure to a yarn or group of yarns causes slipping on the feed rollers to produce short tufts. Each cylinder may be selectively connected to alternative sources of pressure for producing their heights of tufts. Alternatively a second tensioner may be provided for each yarn or group of yarns.
