Abstract

1343026 Coating apparatus GLOBE-UNION Inc 10 Dec 1970 [10 March 1970] 58724/70 Heading B2L Apparatus for applying strip coating with overlapping edges to a substrate comprises rollers 30, 32, 56 for advancing a substrate under an applicator comprising a number of compartments 74, 76 having a common partition wall 94 between adjacent compartments and edge means 124 forming a wall of the compartment to control the thickness of the applied coating. Substrates which may be single sheets or a continuous web are fed towards the coating head by means of rollers 30, 32 the roller 30 being adjustable in height relative to roller 32. When the substrate has passed the coating head it is contacted by an edge engaging roller 56 and at the opposite side by further compensating rollers (not shown). The rollers 56, 30, 32 are driven in synchronism. The coating head 72 has compartments 72, 74 Which open downwardly the openings being defined by edges 90, 92 and a common partition wall 94. The wall 94 is tapered downwardly and from front to back to provide a point 96 which allows the coating medium in the compartments to run together to form an edge immediately before it encounters a doctor blade edge 124. The doctor blade 119 forms one wall of the compartments and is adjustable by a micrometer 128. The. substrate is pressed upwardly in the region of the coating head by leaf springs (not shown).
