Abstract
1,058,140. Handling radio-active material. EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY (EURATOM). Dec. 11, 1963 [Dec. 12, 1962], No. 49006/63. Heading B4Q. A handling and observation device for an elongated radio-active body, e.g. a fuel element, comprises a sealed enclosure 1 partly above and partly below the ground level 2 and surrounded by concrete shielding 4 and lead shielding 5 penetrated by observation ports 32, 33. A stationary shaft 6 supported at the ends of the enclosure 1 serves as a guide for an upper pair of fuel element support collars 13, 14 and a lower pair of support collars 23, 24. The collars 13, 14 are connected by a link 18 and are free to rotate and slide on an upper sleeve 10 rigid with the shaft 6. The collars 23, 24 are connected by a link 27 and are keyed to a lower sleeve 20 rotatable on the shaft 6 by gearing 28 having a manual control 29. The top collar 13 includes a remotely operable clamp 16 and is supported by a winch 17, the collar 14 being connected to the collar 23 by a detachable link 30. In order to load a fuel element 15 supported by a pulley block 31 into the collars 13, 14, 23, 24, the collars are lowered to the bottom position 13<SP>1</SP>, 14<SP>1</SP>, 23<SP>1</SP>, 24<SP>1</SP> by the winch 17 and rotated by the control 29 to lie beneath the block 31, the fuel element then being lowered into the collars and the clamp 16 closed. The fuel element 15 may then be moved to the solid line position by reverse movements of the control 29 and winch 17.
