Abstract

Gasoline and middle distillates are produced from a hydrocarbon feed selected from petroleum distillates b.p. 200 DEG to 1100 DEG F. and petroleum residua boiling above 500 DEG F. by contacting the feed and 1000 to 10,000 S.C.F. of hydrogen per barrel of feed in a first conversion zone at 500 DEG to 950 DEG F., pressures above 500 p.s.i.g. and an L.H.S.V. of 0.1 to 4.0 with a catalyst comprising silica-magnesia, at least one hydrogenating component selected from metals and compounds of Group VI metals and at least one hydrogenating component selected from metals and compounds of Group VIII metals, recovering from the effluent of the first conversion a middle distillate product boiling in the range 320 DEG to 650 DEG F. and a light gasoline product, hydrocracking in a second conversion zone in presence of an active acidic hydrocracking catalyst at least a portion of the liquid effluent from the first conversion zone, said effluent containing materials boiling within the range 180 DEG to 300 DEG F. or at above 650 DEG F., or both, and recovering a gasoline product from the effluent from the second conversion zone. The preferred Group VI metals present in amounts of 1 to 40 weight per cent of the catalyst are chromium, molybdenum and tungsten and the preferred Group VIII metals present in amounts of 1 to 12% of the catalyst are iron cobalt, nickel, platinum and palladium. In preferred embodiments (1) at least two reactors are used in the first conversion zone which may be operated in parallel for maximizing middle distillates or in series for maximizing gasoline production, (2) the liquid effluent from the first conversion zone contains portions which boil at 180 DEG to 300 DEG F. and/or above 650 DEG F. and the portion boiling above 660 DEG F. is recycled to the first conversion zone; (3) at least a portion of the effluent from the second conversion zone boiling at above 650 DEG F. is recycled to the first conversion zone, (4) a portion of liquid effluent from the second conversion zone is reformed to produce high octane gasoline, (5) the effluent from the first conversion zone is hydrocracked by passage through only a portion, e.g. the lower 30 to 50 volume per cent, of the catalyst mass in the second conversion zone and (6) the catalyst used in (5) above comprises nickel and molybdenum on an alumina support.
