Abstract
1457861 Hydrorefining distillates BASF AG 31 Jan 1974 [2 Feb 1973] 04473/74 Heading C5E A process for removing aromatics and sulphur compounds from a petroleum fraction boiling within the range 25‹ to 250‹ C. comprises the steps: (a) catalytically hydrogenating the feed in a first reaction zone using a sulphur-resistant catalyst to reduce the sulphur content to below 3 ppm; (b) removing hydrogen sulphide from the product from the first reaction zone; (c) reacting the sulphur-free product from (b) with hydrogen at a hydrogen pressure of up to 105 atmospheres and a temperature of up to 370‹ C. in the presence of a catalyst comprising an active component which has been produced from the precursor Me<SP>2+</SP> 6 Me<SP>3+</SP> 2 (OH) 16 CO 3 .4H 2 O ; wherein Me<SP>2+</SP> is Fe, Co, Ni or Mg and Me<SP>3+</SP> is Al or Cr; and (d) cooling the product from (c) and separating it into a gas phase containing hydrogen, which can be recycled to the first hydrogenation (a), and a liquid product. The first hydrogenation can be carried out at 100-400‹ C. using a sulphided catalyst of either cobalt and molybdenum or nickel and molybdenum on alumina. The hydrogen sulphide is suitably removed by absorption on zinc oxide. The catalyst used in the second hydrogenation suitably comprises 5-64 wt. per cent nickel supported on alumina and/or silica.
