Abstract
A fire-resistant polyester is prepared by condensing an aliphatic polyol with a compound of formula <FORM:1048097/C3/1> where R is a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon radical and R1 is H or a hydrocarbon radical, in the presence of a catalyst. The aromatic nuclei of the phosphonate may be further substituted with ether, halogen or nitro groups. The reaction may take place at above 100 DEG C. Examples are given in which R=isopropyl (1,2) and cyclohexyl (3,4), R1=H (4) and Me (1-3), the polyhydric alcohol is ethylene, glycol and the catalyst is Mg/PbO2 (1, 2), and ZnCl2 (3, 4). Dimethyl terephthalate is present in Examples 1 and 2.
