Abstract

A rubber-silica composition is prepared continuously by a process wherein an aqueous dispersion of elastomer containing a non-ionic emulsifier is introduced into a mixing vessel simultaneously with an aqueous, acid dispersion of a wet-precipitated silica, said dispersion having a pH of 1 to 5, whereby the elastomer is coagulated in intimate mixture with the silica and continuously withdrawing the precipitate formed from the vessel. If desired, further additions of dilute acid may be made to the mixing vessel to maintain an acid pH. The process is applicable to natural or synthetic rubbers and other polymers. In the example, a styrene/butadiene rubber mixed with 5% of a soy bean/lecithin plasticizer is used.
