Abstract
A vulcanizable composition consisting substantially of natural or synthetic rubber, vulcanizing auxiliaries and precipitated silica at least a part of which has a specific surface of from 250 to 400 m.2/g. is made by a process comprising forming a mixture of rubber latex and suspended silica either by: (a) preparing a suspension of silica, adjusting the pH first to a value between 2 and 4 and subsequently to a value between 4 and 7.5 and then mixing it with rubber latex, or (b) mixing a silica suspension with rubber latex and introducing the mixture into acid maintaining the pH between 2 and 4, or forming a mixture of rubber latex and water glass and introducing the mixture and an acid simultaneously into an alkaline electrolyte, maintaining the pH between 8 and 10 and subsequently adjusting the pH to between 2 and 4, and then coagulating the rubber together with the silica, separating the coagulum, washing if desired, and drying. The coagulum may be granulated before completely drying and then mixed with the vulcanization auxiliaries. A protective colloid, e.g. casein, may be added to the latex.
