Abstract

Alcohols of the general formula R2OCH2CHOHCH2NHR1 (wherein R1 stands for an alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, alkenyl or cycloalkyl radical, and R2 stands for a tricyclic hydrocarbon residue in which at least two of the rings are aromatic in nature), esters thereof derived from an aliphatic or aromatic carboxylic acid, oxazolidine derivatives of the general formula <FORM:1046001/C2/1> (wherein R3 stands for a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical) and acid addition salts of the alcohols, esters and oxazolidine derivatives are prepared by (a)-in the case of alcohols-reacting a compound of the formula R2OCH2A (wherein A stands for the group <FORM:1046001/C2/2> or -CHOHCH2Halogen) with an amine of the formula R1NH2, (b)-in the case of alcohols-hydrogenolysing a compound of the formula R2OCH2CHOHCH2NR1R4 (wherein R4 stands for a hydrogenolysable group), (c)-in the case of esters-acylating the appropriate alcohol or an acid addition salt thereof, or (d)-in the case of oxazolidine derivatives-reacting the appropriate alcohol with an aldehyde of the formula R3CHO, optionally followed in each case by acid addition salt formation. The preparation of starting materials for processes (a) and (b) and of 3-(N-benzyl-N-iso-propylamino) - 1 - (4 - fluorenyloxy) - 2 - propanol picrate is described. The alcohols, esters and oxazolidine derivatives and their salts are useful in the treatment or prophylaxis of heart diseases and in the treatment of hypertension and phaeochromocytoma, and may be administered in the form of pharmaceutical preparations containing them together with a diluent or carrier.
