An air permeable mattress, e.g. of polythene or polyurethene, is formed at its head end with a multiplicity of through holes 6 extending from top to bottom of the pad and is covered at its head end with an air permeable sleeve 7 of textile material. The imperforate part of the pad is covered by an impermeable sleeve 8 of plastics material. The pad may be laminated.
