Abstract
1,044,044. Vacuum extruding ceramic materials. MITSUBISHI GENSHIRYOKU KOGYO KABUSHIKI KAISHA. July 9, 1963, No. 27094/63. Heading B5A. Ceramic, or powdered non-plastic ceramic material to which a binder has been added, is formed into a pre-shaped mass, by passage through a screw-extrusion machine, then immediately vacuum degassed, and subsequently extruded to form the desired shape, whilst still in the degassed state, by passage through an extrusion press. Material is fed into cylinder 12 via inlet 16 and rolls 52 (Fig. 3, not shown), then extruded by screw 14 through slitshaped openings 20 into the vacuum degassing chamber 22. After degassing the material is fed through further rolls to screw member 24 and then conveyed by transfer piston 32 from the preshaping chamber 28, where it is preshaped to a form suitable for loading, to the pressing chamber 36 of an extrusion press 30 whilst still under vacuum. It is then extruded by piston 38 out through nozzle 40, into the desired final shape. In alternative embodiments, the transfer piston is omitted (Figs. 3 to 5, not shown), and a single screw extrusion stage is utilized (Fig. 6, not shown). Examples and comparisons of the extrusion of kaolin, alumina powder and uranium or thorium dioxide powder by this and other customary methods are given.
