Abstract

1375237 Powder extrusion BARMAG BARMER MASCHINENFABKIK AG 25 April 1972 [27 April 1971] 19137/72 Heading B5A Thermoplastic powder, e.g. PVC is heated to between its softening and melting points in the first stage 1 of a cascaded screw extruder to compact the polymer into a porous mass without melting, the porous mass is broken up into pieces and fed into a vacuum chamber between the extruder stages where it is de-gassed at a similar temperature before being drawn into the second stage where it is plasticized and extruded. In Fig. 1, grooves in the tip 6 of the screw form strands which are chopped by pins projecting from the barrel. Alternatively strands are formed by a perforated plate 18, Fig. 4, or projecting pins (not shown), attached to the barrel and chopped by pins 19 arranged downstream on a projection 16 of the screw 5.
