Abstract

[Also in Division F2] The speed of the outward stroke of a compressed air operated piston 21, Fig. 3 (not shown) having a tubular rod 22 extending through one end 10 of a cylinder 13 is controlled by restricting flow of fluid from within a portion of the rod 22 through apertures 61, 63 in a tube 48 fixed to the other cylinder end 11, a metering orifice 65 leading to a liquid chamber formed by cylinder head 11 and a piston 40 within a cylinder 14 having a compressed air inlet 74 whereby during the uncontrolled inward stroke of the piston 21 effected by admitting compressed air through an inlet 73 to the cylinder 13 air pressure acting on piston 40 serves to assist in returning liquid past a check valve 52 at end of tube 48 and through aperture 63 into said portion of tubular rod 22. As shown the liquid space is bounded by a cap 27 and a piston 47 at the end of rod 48. In a modification wherein the inward stroke of piston 21 is hydraulically controlled, the liquid space within the tubular rod 22 is bounded by the piston 47 and the outer closed end of the rod 22.
