Abstract
Procedure for obtaining γ -lactones of 17-hydroxy-7- (lower alkyl) carbonyl-3-oxo-17αpregn-4-ene-21-carboxylic acids, of general formula: **(See formula)** and the corresponding compounds, in which lactone is in the form of the corresponding 17-hydroxy-21-carboxylic acids and the alkali metal, alkaline earth metal/2 and ammonium salts of 17-hydroxy-21-carboxylic acids; wherein Z is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkali metal, alkaline earth metal/2, ammonium, and alkyl; the dotted line indicates that bond Δ 1 is selected from the group consisting of saturated and unsaturated bonds; the wavy line indicates that the configuration at position-7 is selected from the α and β configurations and when Z is alkyl and the 1,2-bond is saturated, X in formula (Ia) is selected from the group consisting of oxygen and sulfur, otherwise X is oxygen; characterized in that a compound of the formula is contacted: **(See formula)** where the dotted and wavy lines are as defined above, with a compound of the formula: Z-XH wherein Z and X are as defined above, in order to provide the corresponding compound of formula (Ia) wherein Z is alkyl.
