Abstract

An apparatus for collecting, with great efficiency, magnetic particles contained in aqueous kaolin clay suspensions of particles less than one micron in size, comprising: (a) a magnetic space containing collection surfaces defined by a mass magnetic stainless steel wool; (b) a magnetic field means, intended to establish in said magnetic space an average magnetic field intensity of at least 5,000 gauss, whereby said ferromagnetic material is made capable of attracting the magnetically susceptible particles of said suspension; and (c) means for passing said suspension through said space and around said collection surface, said means being further designed to produce a tortuous flow path for said suspension, whereby said attractible particles are brought to the proximity of a multiplicity of high field gradients, and dragged to said collection surfaces, which retain said particles to remove them from said suspension.
