Abstract
1347396 Magnetic separators J M HUBER CORP 19 April 1971 [13 March 1970] 25116/71 Heading B2J Apparatus for effecting high efficiency collection of magnetic particles contained in aqueous slurries comprises a flow path for the slurry through a magnetic field of at least 5000 gauss, said path including a container 7 filled with elongate ferromagnetic element and positioned between pole pieces 2. A magnetic field of 20,000 gauss is provided by an electromagnet having the coils 2 which are preferably water cooled and ferromagnetic sections 3-6 surrounding a cylindrical cavity 28 housing one or more canisters 7 made of stainless steel or PVC. The space within the canister 7 is packed with steel wool and baffles &c. to provide the collecting surface material. Slurry, for example a dispersion of crude kaolin clay in water, is pumped into the canister through a pipe 8 and fed away through a pipe 11. Conical connections such as at 33, 34 and pebbles 36 are provided to distribute the flow throughout the canister. Periodically the canister is back flushed first at low pressure with the magnetic field still on to remove collected non-magnetic particles (middlings) and then at high pressure with the field switched off.
