Abstract

An electrical connector comprises a dielectric block having a base 1 and a pair of elementreceiving carriers 2, which are attached to the base by latches 6 and 16 which have camming surfaces 22, 221 respectively. As shown, contact elements are fitted into passageways 11 in the carriers 2 through open seams, the bulbous parts 18 of the elements being received in recesses 15, and posts 17 of the elements extending beyond the base. Contact arms 19 of the contact elements extend into the tapered parts 14 of the passageways, with their free ends 20 adjacent the inner faces of necked portions 13. The carriers 2 are attached to the base 1 and the connector is then mounted on a printed circuit-board (24, Fig. 3, not shown), the posts 17 being flow-soldered to printed circuit paths (25), the connector being spaced from the board by projections (9) formed on the base 1 and being attached to the board by a screw passed through a screw-hole (5, Fig. 5, not shown), which is also surrounded by a projection (10). An integrated circuit module (IC, Fig. 3) is then received on top of the connector with its leads (21) contacting contacts 19 in the passageways, the entrances to the passageways being tapered (12, 8) and the leads also being tapered (21a, Fig. 4, not shown). The connector may alternatively be formed with the passageways 11 formed in the outer surface of side walls 3, carriers 2 being replaced by planar walls fitted with latching means.
