Abstract

An explosive composition of improved sensitivity comprises an inorganic oxygen-supplying salt, water, a thickener, a carbonaceous fuel, a liquid chlorinated organic compound, and an occluded gas bubble stabilizer comprising a water-soluble salt of lignosulphonic acid or a water-soluble flavonoid. The chlorinated organic compound may be carbon tetrachloride, trichloroethylene, perchloroethylene, hexachloroethane, or chloroform. Suitable gas bubble stabilizers are ammonium, sodium or calcium lignosulphonate, or a polyphenolic extract from wood or bark. Finely divided aluminium or aluminium alloy may also be present. The preferred oxygen-supplying salt is ammonium nitrate, but some or all of this may be replaced by sodium, potassium, barium, or calcium nitrate. Carbonaceous fuels specified are fuel oil, diesel oil, pulverized coal, starch, cellulosic materials, sugars, urea, formamide, and partially nitrated hydrocarbons. The thickener may be guar or carob seed gum. Other ingredients present in compositions according to the examples are ethylene glycol as dispersant, zinc chromate as segregation inhibitor, and 2-ethyl-1-hexanol and n-octanol as density controllers.
