Extensive studies have been carried out with regard to the sulfur content of the melt, with the result that the master alloy can be used at sulfur contents in the range from 0.01 to 0.035%, which is attributed in particular to the calcium addition.
- the above-mentioned master alloy is commercially available in coarse grain. It is added to the melt in the pan, taking into account the sulfur content present in each case. A problem with this type of treatment is that the treatment may fade away. The melt must therefore be poured quickly. The rather coarse grain also prevents a completely even distribution in the melt. For this reason, the treatment process for the production of casting types with thin wall thicknesses is ruled out. This is because neither uniform formation of vermicular graphite nor a uniformly soft cast structure without carbide formations can be achieved. These disadvantages as a result of the coarse grain of the master alloy and its use in the pan are exacerbated by the recommended, widely spread sulfur content of the melt. It has proven to be impossible to produce a usable cast iron with vermicular graphite for thin-walled, rapidly solidifying castings, according to the information in DE-OS 27 05 630.
