Device for stunning and/or killing an eel

The invention relates to a device for stunning and/or killing an eel.

Such devices with a holding device for holding the eel in position and with a stunning or killing device that can be moved against the eel transversely to the longitudinal extension of the eel are known.

In this device, the holding device consists of an approximately Y-shaped component. A continuous guide recess is formed in the vertical straight leg of the Y, in which a guide pin is slidably arranged, one end of which projects into the area of the diverging legs of the Y and carries a killing knife. The other end of the guide pin also projects out of the guide recess on the other side and is provided with a loading plate.

A pre-tensioned compression spring is arranged between the loading plate and the Y-shaped component, which normally moves the guide pin until the killing knife is at the base of the leg opening of the Y.

In order to stun or kill an eel caught with a fishing rod, the eel is pressed to the ground in the area behind its head using the fork opening of the Y and by pressing on the impact plate against the force of the compression spring, the killing knife is stabbed into the eel via the guide pin.

Since the eel has a slippery outer skin and is therefore difficult to grasp and hold, it is problematic to bring this fish into a resting position on the ground in order to fix it to the ground with the fork opening of the holding device.

This well-known device, known as an "eel killer", requires an additional support to provide counter pressure or uses the existing ground. As eels are usually caught at night, this requirement is disadvantageous in the dark. Severing the spinal nerves in the eel's neck to stun it is very difficult and takes a relatively long time, as the eel twists and turns so that the nerve tract cannot be severed. In addition, the eel presses itself into the ground on soft or rocky ground.

Here, too, the problem of immobilizing the eel is present. In addition, the exact starting point for severing the spinal nerves cannot be determined precisely.

It is therefore difficult or even impossible to stun the eel in a humane manner given the current state of technology.

The invention is therefore based on the object of developing a cost-effective device of the type mentioned at the beginning, which enables a very quick, simple, animal-friendly stunning or killing of an eel.

the device is designed as a pair of pliers with two jaws, one jaw having a concave contour and the other jaw having a cutting part, the concave contour and the cutting part being arranged in such a way that the cutting part penetrates essentially centrally into a part with a circular cross-section, in particular an eel, which is adjacent to the concave contour during a closing movement of the pliers.

The device according to the invention is of a simple design. This device can be used to stun the eel precisely, in a controlled and very quick manner. The same applies to killing the eel. No additional counter-pressure is required, as this counter-pressure is provided by the one jaw with the concave contour. There is no longer any risk of injury to the angler. The "eel killer" according to the state of the art, on the other hand, can easily slip, and the angler can injure himself with the cutting blade. The same applies to the shooting device according to the state of the art mentioned above, as here too the device itself does not guarantee that the eel will be held securely.

According to the invention, the eel does not suffer any pain, as the stunning or killing is carried out very quickly. Another advantage is that the eel does not need to be put down. The device according to the invention allows the eel to be stunning quickly and in a humane manner.

It is also proposed that one jaw has at least one stop shoulder to limit the cutting depth. This prevents the eel's head from being severed, but the cutting part still penetrates sufficiently deep into the eel's back at exactly the desired location to sever the spinal nerves.

It is further proposed that the pliers according to the invention have a mechanism for limiting the closing movement of the two jaws. This also prevents the cutting part from penetrating too deeply into the eel's back. This mechanism can be designed as a locking mechanism, which allows the cutting part to snap shut suddenly when the pliers handles are manually pressed together. The use of this mechanism, which is known per se in pliers, for the device according to the invention represents a further advantageous embodiment.

Finally, it is proposed that the cutting part has a width of 3 to 10 mm and in particular 6 mm. This small width means that only the spinal nerves are specifically severed, but the eel is otherwise relatively little injured. In particular, the eel's head is certainly not severed. However, the small width of the cutting part only makes sense in combination with the precise positioning of the eel by means of the technical features of claim 1 in order to specifically hit only the spinal nerves with the cutting part.

With the design according to claim 5, a uniform pressure and counterpressure is achieved. Shear forces do not act on the eel.

The device according to the invention essentially consists of a handle part 2 with one jaw 2a at the end opposite the handle part 2, a handle part 3 which is movable relative to the handle part 2 and which can be pivoted relative to the handle part 2 about an axis 10. Finally, a special knife with a cutting part 7 is provided as the other jaw 1, the special knife being pivotable relative to the handle part 2 about an axis of rotation 11. A stop shoulder 9 is provided to limit the penetration depth of the cutting part 7.

A locking mechanism 4 with a tension spring 6 enables the jaw 1, i.e. the special knife, to snap quickly shut when the handle parts 2 and 3 are pressed together in the direction of the jaw 2a with the concave contour 2b, which can also be called a counter-pressure half-shell. The knife 1 is connected to the locking mechanism 4 via a connecting part 5.

A second spiral spring, not visible in the figures, presses the handle parts 2, 3 apart, as is known per se in the prior art. Furthermore, the jaw 2a is slotted. The slot 12 is indicated in Figure 1. Without a limitation of the movement of the special knife 1, this knife could penetrate into the slot 12.

The device works as follows. With the pliers open (Figure 1), the eel 8 is held with one hand against the concave contour 2b, i.e. against the counter-pressure half-shell, while the handle parts 2, 3 are pressed together with the other hand. The special knife 1 is actuated via the mechanism 4 and, after overcoming a certain pressure point, is suddenly opened by the force of the spring.

Device for stunning and/or killing an eel, characterized in that the device is designed as a pair of pliers with two jaws, one jaw ( 2 a) has a concave contour ( 2 b) and the other jaw ( 1 ) has a cutting part ( 7 ), the concave contour ( 2 b) and the cutting part ( 7 ) being arranged in such a way that the cutting part ( 7 ) penetrates essentially centrally into a part with a circular cross-section resting on the concave contour ( 2 b), in particular into an eel ( 8 ), during a closing movement of the pliers. 2. Device according to claim 1, characterized in that one jaw has at least one stop shoulder ( 9 ) for limiting the cutting depth. 3. Device according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the pliers have a mechanism for limiting the closing movement of the two jaws. 4. Device according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the cutting part ( 7 ) has a width of 3 to 10 mm and in particular of 6 mm. 5. Device according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the jaw ( 2a ) has a support width of at least 10 mm and that the line of movement of the cutting part ( 7 ) strikes the center of the support ( 13 ) of the jaw ( 2a ).
