Edge protection for cut rubber drive belts and process for their manufacture
The invention relates to an edge protector for cut rubber drive belts or the like with high tensile strength
Tapes consisting of textile inlays and rubber coverings and a method for producing the edge protection.
Rubber drive belts od. Like. Belts are known to consist of tensile textile inserts, z. B. made of fabric that is surrounded by a rubber cover layer to protect against wear and moisture absorption. When such flat belts are manufactured individually, the rubber cover layer naturally also includes the edges. But it is also customary to produce such flat belts in a wider web, from which the individual belts are cut in the desired width.
In order to give these vulcanized, cut belts a pleasing appearance on the one hand, and on the other hand to protect the fabric insert visible on the cut surface from moisture absorption during storage and use, the cut surfaces have so far been preferably coated with a colored solution of natural and / or synthetic rubber mixture by spraying or dipping covered or painted by hand. This type of attachment of the edge protection is very time consuming and requires relatively long drying times.
The edges of the individual pulleys also stick together when stored in a stack, are usually damaged when they are separated and become unsightly as a result. Furthermore, the surface of the protective coating is very rough, so that the edges are easily subject to soiling that is difficult to remove.
A better edge protection for cut rubber drive belts, which can be carried out in a shorter working time, has now been found according to the invention in that the cut surfaces are provided with a protective layer made of thermoplastic material, preferably polyethylene. According to the invention, the method for applying this protective layer consists in that it is pressed onto the cut surfaces on both sides in a single operation in the form of a film using pressure and heat.
A press temperature of approximately 1400 ° C. and a pressing time of 1 to 2 minutes have proven to be favorable for carrying out the process. At this temperature and pressing time, perfect flow of the film and good welding to the belt edge was achieved.
The edge protection according to the invention gives the article a much more pleasing appearance due to its beautiful smooth surface. Since the application can be carried out on both sides at the same time in one operation, the working time could be significantly reduced. The process does not require any drying times, which means that the need for work space is much lower. The pulleys do not stick together during storage, even over a long period of time. Due to the smooth surface, cleaning is easy to carry out in the event of any contamination, and any damage that may occur to the protective layer can easily be repaired using a soldering iron or the like.
