Abstract
La introducción de actividad de sacarosa fosforilasa en vegetales por medio de su transformación con un gen de la enzima aumenta la hidrólisis de la sacarosa y conduce a un aumento en los niveles de almidón, aceite y proteína. Se describe un método para producir una planta transgenica, que comprende los pasos de: (a) establemente transformar en el genoma de una célula vegetal una molécula de ADN recombinante de cadena doble que comprende: (i) un promotor que funciona en las células de un tejido vegetal de destino, (ii) una secuencia de ADN estructural, obtenido de una fuente microbiana, que provoca la producción de una secuencia de ARN que codifica una enzima sacarosa fosforilasa, (iii) una secuencia 3' no traducida de ADN que funciona en las células vegetales para producir la terminación transcripcional y el agregado nucleótido poliadenilados al extremo 3' de la secuencia de ARN; (b) seleccionar células vegetales transformadas; y entre (c) regenerar a partir de dichas células vegetales una planta genéticamente transformada cuyo genoma contiene dicha molécula de ADN recombinante de doble cadena de paso entre (a); donde dicha planta genéticamente transformada exhibe una propiedad seleccionada del grupo que consiste de comprender un contenido de carbohidratos modificado; un contenido aumentado de polisacárido; un aumento del rendimiento en el material cosechado; una mejor uniformidad de distribución de sólidos y una disminución en la susceptibilidad a decoloración por un dano.
