Yesss you worded it so perfectly hahah. They really could've written her a different way. And you are right about Takopii's sacrifice not being purely good and the story making his treatment be story relevant / not without purpose, good point there!

And yay!! I am really happy that I got you interested to give With You Our Love Will Make it Through a chance! Your expectations definitely are still somewhat applicable: Since it is a Shoujo manga, and it does have a very furry bait art style, with scenes that appeal to the teen girls in the audience who love monsters (after all, that must've been why Ancient Magus Bride, Shape of Water, and This Monster Wants to Eat Me was so popular, the teen girl audience sure do love romance with monsters heh), but there is also a lot of meat on the bones of the story, with some really interesting storytelling, characters who are legit really badass... There is a lot of meat on it, it has some real good Shoujo writing like what I came to love the Shoujo Demographic for. Without spoiling you too much, there is this scene where the main character is standing up to a group of harassing boys as she protects her friend (the friend happens to be a furry who was being harassed due to the boys believing a stereotype that furry girls are "easy" to get with) and basically, the main girl slaps away the arm of the harassing boys and delivers this epic speech which doesn't make that much sense on a logic level, but makes perfect sense on an emotional level,
And as I was watching all that I got so hype cause that's exactly the kind of Shoujo vibes I look for, like I was watching this and thinking, oh my gosh this is just like Skip Beat or Kodocha. This is just like when the main girl in those shows stands up and takes control of the situation in that badass Shoujo protagonist way <333
And on top of that, the show just looks gorgeous, it clearly has a bit of a small team (It is a Shoujo, I would not expect it to look like a Bones or Madhouse show) but the small team working on it do fricking phenomenal work, there are so many scenes that look really memorable and stick in my mind forever, even if they're not exactly the most complicated animation.

I am SO GLAD you said that about the blonde (Marina I believe she is named). I feel really bothered by it because I don't want to come off like I am saying a kid is the most awful character (since I do understand that there are some people online who will think an argument is invalid if you ever complain about a kid character specifically, like I have heard a lot of people use the argument of "stop beefing with elementary schoolers" to immediately try to shut down anyone who ever criticizes a kid character... But I dunno, I have seen better written, more redeemable bullies than Marina, and I think Marina should be criticized. What really did it for me is that in several timelines she is also abusive to the main girl's dog as well (intentionally provokes the dog, getting the dog to bite her, and knowing that it would cause the dog to be blamed and put down. This girl did that all knowingly, and honestly animal abuse is just such a line crossed for me, combined with all the other stuff you said that also makes her very ridiculous of a character to redeem. Even if Takopi supposedly created a "happy" timeline I truly don't believe that we can just make a happy timeline where Marina ever deserves that friendship, or deserves to be friends with these kids who she tormented and tormented the pet of, so so badly.
Perfectly said, I am really glad you agree with me on that and I like how you describe it. You word it in a more professional way than I can, since I let my feelings get a bit intense when I talk about Takopii. Also... As someone who protects and cares about mascots, I really don't like the way Takopii is treated either. At the start of the story, Takopii is child like and would never hurt anyone, but also is naive and doesn't understand fear. Then Takopii experiences fear for the first time through seeing a bully like Marina. Then a bunch of plot stuff happens and
And then after that, the story has every other character abusing Takopii horribly, and then after all of that, all this stress on this poor mascot, well,
and that is a good thing and leads to a good ending. So this story that was supposed to be about coping with depression and abuse, ends with the worst possible thing someone can do to themselves, being framed as a correct choice (eek!) and good thing that solves a problem...

On the bright side if you enjoy the concept of "main boy falls in love with main girl because something about her reminds him of his mom" then you may actually enjoy the anime With You Our Love Will Make it Through, it is my favorite anime of 2025 and it directly addresses that fascinatingly. Basically there is a twist introduced in episode 2 that makes you think "wait, are you telling me that the main couple is like, directly comparable to this boy's parents" and then those feelings continue to build as the series continues and then in the last episode it is directly addressed by having the main girl and the mom both on screen side by side and interacting.
It is my favorite anime of 2025 it is deeply fascinating for many reasons. It also looks visually beautiful, it is the best shojo anime adaption in terms of art and directing that I have seen in a long time. Shojo are awesome but they usually get really rough adaptions nowadays. Somehow the furry shojo ended up with one of the prettiest adaptions of the 2020s.

Also it is so epic that we both have the exact same score for Takopi. I wish more people had the mindset like you and I, because I consider the show to just be... Servicable but... Unremarkable.
Also I have looked into some people who discuss it online and I think some of them just barely know anything about anime... I saw a post that said Takopi was unique for being a story about an alien helping out kids and helping them through their issues (and this was like an opinion that everyone was agreeing on, even one of the dub voices replied like "yeah I never saw an anime like Takopi that is about that"). These inexperienced people... They don't know of the Junichi Sato directed peak, Sgt Frog Keroro Gunsou

Oh yeah I can understand what you mean when you say that type of humor also appeals to you. I suppose looking back on it, I can definitely enjoy some stuff with serious acting characters who are actually doing something silly. I do also enjoy the contrast of a normally cute looking mascot suddenly getting a serious and deadly expression because they are about to do something badass. So in a way that is kind of similar too!

I suppose what I should have said was that I was happy Niwatori Fighter had such a variety of humor and was not a one trick pony, it is always good to see an anime that has variety :)
I see, so you are interested to go to a con near you at some time? Yeah, I definitely agree with your statement that smaller local cons are better. I have been to two cons in my life, one was a big corporate one in a big city, and then one was just a smaller con (the one with the charity events). I have had more fun at and continued to return to the smaller one. Though the big one was not a complete wash and had some nice memories (like I was given a free replacement by an artist of a poster I bought from them after I lost the first copy / possibly a thief nabbed the first poster when my back was turned... A strange moment at the big con, but a sweet moment that made me feel happy.)

Oh also I finally have an answer to that bizarre phenomenon I was discussing with you about Gravitation, and why I thought that Nabeshin directed it / it was linked on his Wikipedia for as long as I have ever viewed the page: Turns out, there was a Gravitation OVA, and Nabeshin directed that. When I clicked the link to the main Wikipedia page, I learned that, and upon checking the details on Anime News Network for the staff for the OVA it turns out it is true! Glad we finally have an answer to that, cause Wikipedia never clarified what part he worked on, and I was fascinated by it for a while.

I have returned after watching episode one of Niwatori Fighter! As a start I did not know it was by Studio Sanzigen until I noticed their name on MAL. But now that I know, I can see what you meant when you said the studio is known for good CGI, cause I remember encountering some of their work in Youtube videos and yeah Sanzigen's stuff seems good! As for this show, I enjoyed the first episode, in particular I appreciated that it had more variety with comedy than I was expecting. I did know there would be some comedy going in, but I thought maybe it would be one of those show's where the joke is just "It is a silly scene, but for the characters it is taken seriously", but I was relieved as there was much more comedy than just that. In particular I think my favorite joke was the one that happens right after Keiji says "I can't leave a woman crying, it's not my style", the thing that happens right after that which I probably can't say in a MAL comment was very funny. (◠﹏◠✿)
I am glad you asked about the convention I am going to in Maine, basically, I enjoy doing many things there. I usually go on my own, but I end up finding friends to hang out with because so many like minded people are there. Last year when I went to this convention, one of the panel hosts wanted to hang out with me, because they were a fan of my YouTube, and I was wearing a shirt with my channel name. So, I enjoy going to panels about various topics (there were great panels on Leiji Matsumoto, and Magical Girls for some examples) and also there is a garage sale at the con where you can leave old things you don't want anymore, the garage sale staff keeps them safe and sells them, and you get portions of the profit (about 75% of the profit goes back to you, and 25% goes to charity! The people running the garage sale are volunteers).
You are completely right that Fullmetal Panic Fumoffu is best enjoyed when you are at least somewhat familiar with the serious installments of FMP, but I would say that it is not essential to watch too much FMP to enjoy it, since at the time of it releasing, even serious FMP anime-only watchers only had one season they could watch (the original Studio Gonzo animation season 1, was all that could be watched, at the time of Fumoffu's release). Fumoffu is a show that is really funny even as a standalone, with a sense of humor I would compare to Nurse Witch Komugi, and especially Amagi Brilliant Park, since Fumoffu and Amagi are the same director (Takemoto) and same light novel author who invented both FMP and Amagi (Shoji Gatoh). You can kind of see how through some of the mascot scenes in FMP Fumoffu, the same staff and light novel author later did similar stuff, with Amagi. (I don't think I have to worry that mentioning fumoffu has mascot costume stuff is a spoiler, since it is front and center on the show's poster and everything but yeah, buckle up for some mascot costume stuff heh)

True, I agree. For me, there are definitely some genres I enjoy more than others, but I'll watch/read pretty much anything if it looks good.

To answer your question, yes, I actually do enjoy watching hentai for the plot, lol. I'm a big fan of media containing violence and/or nudity and sexual content - whether it is trying to be thought-provoking or transgressive or just appeal to the base instincts of the viewer, that does not matter. Many hentai OVAs sit in a sweet spot for me because they contain violence, sexuality and taboo subject matters that 'regular' anime could not explore to such a length. That aside, I also just like perusing through obscure media and finding 'hidden gems.' I find that a lot of hentai OVAs contain artistry that is overlooked because they are pornographic works. At least, that's how I feel about them.
Shmubm Mar 11, 6:52 AM
Thanks for the fr! Looking through your list, I see we watch/read a lot of the same stuff. Always nice to meet someone who can appreciate a wide variety of genres, including the more 'forgotten' titles.
ThePacISBack Mar 11, 5:12 AM
That is awesome to know that Niwatori fighter is fun, cause more talking animal or non-human critters, is always gonna make me very happy ^^ Sorry for vanishing for a minute, I got busy with some stuff, I am planning to try going to my first anime convention over the summer, I am making plans for how I will go, what I wanna do / and which day will I go to the con, exciting stuff
Ohhh also, I checked your list in more detail, 8/10 for every part of classic Nurse With Komugi, respect ᕦʕ •`ᴥ•´ʔᕤ
Komugi involved Kyoto Animation helping animate it, and director Takemoto, one of my heroes. He later would direct many shows for Kyoto Animation including co-directing Haruhi, taking over as director on Lucky Star after the previous one quit after 3 episodes, and my personal fave of his work, Amagi Brilliant Park and Fullmetal Panic Fumoffu, two whacked out comedy series that are also directed by him. I love Fumoffu and Amagi with my whole heart, and you can see him building up the humor and directing style of those shows, in his early work on Nurse Witch Komugi... I adore Takemoto, during his life he gave us so much.
Also involved with Komugi is the director Yonentani, he directs several of the most whacked out episodes like the one where Komugi dies over and over. Which is actually very similar to a running gag of a character imagining / daydreaming about random deaths in Brigadoon, a different show that Yonentani directed. There is also a direct recreation of a Brigadoon scene in Nurse Witch Komugi, in a different episode that Yonetani directed. Like, exactly the same dialogue. It is crazy

I completely agree with your take on Invisible Man, I believe the same thing. The author of the manga for that one has also written Josei, in particular a great Josei series by them called Komen Fuufu, is another series they made with strong anthro animal characters, it is about multiple main characters but among them is a Kitsune gal (like full furry), and a tanuki single father. A lot of people are hoping Komen Fuufu gets animated next, after Invisible Man. But even if that other one stays as a manga, it has definitely earned itself a spot as a popular modern Josei, I see Western manga fans all the time reference it, I can remember multiple times in the past few months where panels of the main guy and the Kitsune were viral on Twitter by like, meme pages. Usually with a quote about how the series is a wholesome example of a male fantasy lol. So that has been cool to see, it seems that this author is really bringing attention to Josei manga and to stories that I am into ^^
I am absolutely hype for Kunosoki's Garden of the Gods, the talking animals / spirits look so pretty. I definitely am able to enjoy animal characters too, especially if they can talk or have memorable perosnalities. And yes, I am curious to give a try to Niwatori Fighter as well. I heard a lot about the manga though the anime will be the first time I experience it! I also am looking forward to The Classroom of the Black Cat because that one I actually read the manga for, and it is technically a talking cat as one of the main characters, it is a very silly but very well drawn one. I hope the anime manages to capture the energy of the manga, and hopefully will look... Decent. The manga is so pretty. Kujima looks interesting, I think I was intrigued by it cause of the director, or something haha. I will have to check
EDIT: Yes I am excited cause of the director! Same director as The Magic of Chocolat, A Little Snow Fairy Sugar, Hand Maid May, etc etc. This guy is like a fascinating old school director. And he hasn't directed much recently, but he is returning to direct Kujima. Definetely am intrigued to see what this retro director guy has to say with his bird creature hehe

WOAH crazy, you're right, he wasn't involved in Gravitation. His Wikipedia page claims he directed it :o For the longest time, I used to learn all of my anime info from Wikipedia. I later learned how to actually use MAL and I stopped relying on Wikipedia. But yeah, back in the 2010s I watched Gravitation, and I also happened to be looking into Nabeshin's Wikipedia and so I saw Gravitation on there (it still is there, even now). I can't believe that this was never corrected, since yeah you're right I am not finding anywhere else except Wikipedia that claims he directed it.
My #1 Nabeshin work of all time is probably Poemii (either that, or the many Kodocha episodes that he directed). But yeah probably Poemii since I really appreciate the humor, I think it parodies magical girls really well. Like for example I can see you are 50 episodes in to Cardcaptor Sakura, so I can say this next part and you'll understand: Futaba clearly is meant as a parody on Tomoyo, being the blueish/black haired (depending on the lighting) rich, polite soft spoken girl, who has a Yuri crush on the lead character. Tomoyo popularized this type of character, one of my favorite anime Brigadoon Marin and Melan also has a blatant Tomoyo-like. Seeing one of these highly specific characters in a show, that's how you know they really did their research at the time.
I agree with you about fast paced manga being best brought to life in a short, fast paced adaption.
I do watch lots of seasonal anime, I usually watch any modern show if it seems good, or it has a prominent / cool looking furry anthro in it (thanks for being so nice about that and not minding ^^ btw) but yeah I watch a lot of seasonals if they have Anthros and they seem decent. I picked up The Invisible Man and His Soon to Be Wife because of an anthro on the poster and it has been absolutely outstanding. I believe it will be remembered as a modern classic, as it is getting called a hidden gem, by everyone who gives it a chance. Genuinely fantastic show...

I have seen all of Nerima Daikon Brothers! Thank you for reminding me of that one so that I could add it to my list. I really enjoyed that one, probably my 2nd favorite of what I have seen of Nabeshin's work. I really liked Daikon Brothers, I think it did an admirable job getting close to the craziness of Poemii. It also had the strength of having really likeable characters in my opinion. One of my favorite running gags of the show is that one of the main boys is known for how he is handsome / has a bishonen appeal, which attracts even animals and non-human characters to fall in love with him. At risk of making this conversation weird, I am probably / most likely a furry, so I enjoy anime with blunt / blatant interspecies attraction in it, lmao.
I agree with you that Excel Saga doesn't quite live up to the manic insanity of Poemii. I think because Excel Saga is so much longer, it just felt like the crazyness was a little more stretched out thin, but, it was certainly still solid, I am happy I watched all of Excel.
I agree about Teekyu being one of the shows that comes close to Poemii's mile a minute gags. I think I watched all of season 1 of that, and season 2, but I just don't quite remember. I may just rewatch the first few seasons so I can add it to my list confidently. I definitely watched a lot of that one (yet another recommendation from a friend, I love getting recommendations).
I plan to watch The Wallflower soon, I absolutely love shojo series. (Shojo are also utterly filled with interspecies romance stuff so that is a major plus. Practically all of the most popular shojo anime of the past 15 years have been girl x fox spirit, girl x furry, something like that. heh). I really am looking forward to watch The Wallflower because I cannot wait to experience another Nabeshin Shojo adaption. Since I did complete the yaoi series Gravitation which is also by Nabeshin and was very cheesy, nostalgic fun.
ThePacISBack Mar 9, 6:40 AM
You're right, Kimura is a pretty popular gag character, I should have given him more credit. Heheh. I hope my previously mentioned, favorite mascots are also somewhat popular, I do see they have lots of Myanimelist favorites, and I did see a YouTube video about them the other day, so hopefully X3

I love Puni Poemii and Ongaku. They are both beautiful short form anime that are outstanding at what they try to do! I actually watched both of them around 1 year ago, but I was inspired to add them to my list when I saw them on your page. I watched Ongaku due to a recommendation of a friend, the YouTuber Caribou Kun. He is my friend and introduces me to amazing underrated anime like that. I am amazed that Ongaku was seemingly animated by one guy, it captures the feeling of being in school and feeling unsure of what you want to do (do you want to just skip school, wander the street with your bros? Or do you wanna try to stay at school, find some camaraderie there. Even if you get in conflicts there... Gosh it was so relatable to me, Ongaku was just amazing. They felt like such real teens.
Puni Poemii is great, for entirely different reasons. It is my choice for the funniest Nabeshin anime I have ever seen (though I do love his other shows too). I think Poemii with the short length and genuinely cute characters (absolutely love the character designs) makes the absolute wild and deranged humor that they get up to, even better. The fact that the characters are genuinely believable as the type of characters you would see in a kids show like Cardcaptor Sakura, makes it funnier. The show is also just genuinely likeable, I was surprised by how I was very fond of the characters by the end of the short two episodes. Such an over the top series but I really was happy for them when they all escaped the aliens and were happy at the end, as ridiculous as that sounds.
ThePacISBack Mar 9, 6:00 AM
Thank you, I really appreciate that! Great favorites list you have as well. I appreciate you going to bat for underrated or under appreciated characters, like your list is really unique and I really don't see a lot of people out there stanning Tiger Mask, or Kimura sensei or anything, those are really great character choices. That reminds me of how I tend to try making my favorites list really unique to me and the characters that truly bring me the most comfort in the world. Which above all else is the mascots from Amagi Brilliant Park, I love them sooo much. As for our shared perspective on Ghost Stories, I am really happy that you see what I mean. The show is quite a well produced one (nice animation for the time, great music by the same composer as Inuyasha) and the characters have likable traits (when watched in Sub), like for example I particularly appreciate Momoko and her found family dynamic with Keiichirou. The English dub is bleh for many reasons, but the dub ruined good scenes, like the scenes of Momoko and Keiichirou's wholesome scenes of her helping him to be less afraid of the supernatural (because of her having life long experience with it), I really dislike how the dub just turned those scenes into offensive jokes. They were sweet scenes in the sub...
