Kishuku Gakkou no Juliet (Boarding School Juliet)

Dahlia Academy is an elite school that houses students from two countries at odds: the nation of Touwa to the east, and the Principality of West across it. As the long-lived strife between the two sides continues, Romio Inuzuka—leader of the "Black Doggies" of Touwa—finds himself in a bind. He has fallen in love with Juliet Persia, head of the "White Cats" of the West.

Romio confesses to Juliet one night, swearing he will change the world alongside her. She accepts, but they must keep their relationship an absolute secret in order to maintain peace at the school. As they strive to change the world, can these two star-crossed lovers keep their love a secret?

boarding school Juliet a fresh take on a classic story. i watched the anime adaption then decided to continue with the manga. i was quite pleased with how the story unfolded it had lots of intense moments for the two protagonists while also keeping a calm background element, it could be described as if it were just after a war between Britain and Japan and the two countries were located right across from each other, the romance between the main characters and how they work to conceal it from others was a nice scenario to read even the supporting cast were pleasant to read and ...

Mixed Feelings

Enemies to lovers is an extremely standard trope in manga, so basing a manga, extremely loosely, around Romeo and Juliet seems like a perfect fit. Unfortunately its foundation is so loose that it's quick to lose steam and regresses to mediocrity very fast. It does start strong, the art style is great and the mixture of slapstick comedy and action works well in its favor. Abandoning the rivalry between Romeo and Juliet so quickly and essentially turning it into a game of hide and seek is fairly entertaining and allows for their relationship to grow more naturally throughout the entire course of the story rather ... than putting it off until the very end like most romcom manga end up doing. There's a fairly large cast of characters which helps the school feel alive and they offer a varying amount of comedic value, if nothing else it's an amusing read.

Unfortunately the manga quickly looses sight of what exactly it wants to do. The initial premise of the relationship between Romeo and Juliet is that Romeo vows to change the world into one which would accept their relationship. This would naturally lead you into thinking that there would be some amount of focus put into his development into a better person, perhaps taking on more responsibilities at the school or advocating for change in the student body. Romeo actually ends up doing none of this and it seems as through he actually forgets his goal in favor of his hijinks with Juliet. It's not as though I'm expecting the manga to be especially serious, but some more focus on his actual goals instead of becoming yet another slapstick comedy would've been appreciated. Especially so because everything simply ends up working out in Romeos favor regardless of what he does. He takes the bare minimum amount of action and is rewarded for it endlessly, which is a shame because they easily could've expanded on the rivalry between the two nations as a recurring plot point. Romeo stays the same from the beginning to the end, the only difference is that the audience of his motivational speeches artificially grows a little (from girls in his harem to the greater student body).

These speeches end up occupying a lot of the back half of the manga as well, which is a decision I won't understand. The core strength of the manga lies in both its comedy and art and yet they choose to essentially reject both of these things in order for Romeo to give generic motivational speeches and everyone to simply take them at face value. It's weird, because Romeo is initially described as being unsociable and relatively unpopular among the student body, only given the time of day because he's good in a fight. There's actually a gag near the end of the manga about how little friends he has, and yet we're supposed to believe people respect him? Had they actually allocated some time towards Romeo taking action these moments would feel justified and earned but instead it feels as though he's simply having everything given to him because he's the main character.

It's a shame because Juliet actually does do the things which I wish Romeo would've done. While played mostly for comedy, there's a good amount of chapters of Juliet learning more about Romeo's side and correcting her prejudices about them. It makes her resolutions feel earned because she's much more active, even if only as a consequence of wanting to spend more time with Romeo, and actually seems to want to work towards the goal that she and Romeo are supposedly supposed to achieve. We learn so little about the White Cat side of things because Romeo never stops ending up in conflict with them. For someone who is supposedly trying to unify the two nations, he never stops ending up in fights with them.

I'm willing to forgive this for the first half of the manga, which I believe to be fairly strong in terms of comedy and worldbuilding. Most of this is spent making additions to the cast, which have strong chemistry with one another and solid personalities. Hasuki and Char in particular are both extremely fun characters and add a lot of life in their respective roles. The issue is that none of them end up growing out of these roles naturally. The second half feels like this endless cycle of speeches, convenience, and unearned conclusions. While it's fairly normal for a comedy manga to have characters be stagnant, this manga gives the impression of attempting something more which is what leads to my disappointment. Half the length is dedicated to comedy and then the other half is spend checking off resolutions on a list, they skip the entire middle section which should tie them together.

Even after all that I still think the manga is fine. The art is great, the comedy hits more often than it misses and despite their lack of growth the cast of characters is large and are all above average. If nothing else it's a consistently amusing read, which is pretty much the goal of a comedy manga anyway. I just wish it took its premise with more than a grain of salt.

Extremely overrated garbage that uses elementary humor to try and get laughs. Cheap characters, cheap romance, cheap comedy.

The initial premise is fine, and it starts off alright. There was some potential there. But it quickly grows stale.

Not even 10 chapters in and the male protagonist is already being blackmailed and humiliated publicly in the most cliche plot development conceivable. Then, in another cliche, he easily forgives the perpetrator for the silliest reason possible. Actually, the male protagonist often gets treated with a total lack of respect from practically every character in the series, and he does little about it. He's just a total pushover.
