For as long as he can remember, high school student Ichigo Kurosaki has been able to see the spirits of the dead, but that has not stopped him from leading an ordinary life. One day, Ichigo returns home to find an intruder in his room who introduces herself as Rukia Kuchiki, a Soul Reaper tasked with helping souls pass over. Suddenly, the two are jolted from their conversation when a Hollow—an evil spirit known for consuming souls—attacks. As Ichigo makes a brash attempt to stop the Hollow, Rukia steps in and shields him from a counterattack. Injured and unable to keep fighting, Rukia suggests a risky plan—transfer half of her Soul Reaper powers to Ichigo. He accepts and, to Rukia's surprise, ends up absorbing her powers entirely, allowing him to easily dispatch the Hollow.

Now a Soul Reaper himself, Ichigo must take up Rukia's duties of exterminating Hollows and protecting spirits, both living and dead. Along with his friends Orihime Inoue and Yasutora Sado—who later discover spiritual abilities of their own—Ichigo soon learns that the consequences of becoming a Soul Reaper and dealing with the world of spirits are far greater than he ever imagined.

BackgroundBleach has sold over 130 million copies worldwide as of 2022, making it one of the top 20 best-selling manga series of all time; North American sales have also been significant with 1.7 million copies sold in the region. In 2005, the series won the 50th Shogakukan Manga Award in the shounen category.

The series was published in English by VIZ Media under the Shonen Jump imprint from July 6, 2004, to October 2, 2018, and as omnibus volumes from June 7, 2011, to March 5, 2019; a hardcover collector's edition for volume one was released by VIZ Media on August 5, 2008, a box set of volumes 1-21 was released on September 16, 2008, as well as volumes 22-48 on July 7, 2015, and the final box set containing volumes 49-74 on November 6, 2018. It has also been published in Brazilian Portuguese by Panini Comics since July 2007, and in Spanish by Glénat since June 2006, publishing 51 volumes before the publisher went defunct; it was later republished by Panini Comics from February 2013 to November 2017.

Many adaptations have also been made of Bleach, with four feature-length films, numerous video games, spin-off light novels, databooks, a live-action movie, and even a musical.

Bleach secures a definitive 10/10 and rightfully earns its place among the genre's "Big Three." While this masterpiece sometimes receives unwarranted hate, a full reading of the manga instantly clarifies its genius and why it has earned a permanent spot in my heart.

Mixed Feelings

Bleach is good, but...

Bleach is one of the most famous shounen series ever since I can remember, and I can say that it's very good. It has several unique aspects, such as the fact that each arc is based on a language, such as the Espada arc being in Spanish and the Quincy arc being in German. It's a work that evokes many emotions and undeniably ranks alongside Naruto, Dragon Ball, and other great shounen. However, the reason for my rating of 6 is due to two points. The first is that the art at the beginning of the manga is simply too ugly for ... me, but that's a minor point. The main reason I gave it this rating is very simple: THERE IS NO LOGICAL EXPLANATION FOR WHY THE CHARACTERS FLY! I get indignant every time I remember this, because we have a character whose Bankai is literally the ability to fly, but in a world where everyone flies for no reason, this is completely useless. It's a plot hole that bothers me tremendously, to the point I can't ignore it. Anyway, if it weren't for this issue, my rating for Bleach would be an 8 or even higher, but I simply can't let this pass in a work that creates so many concepts and reflections. I can't understand how they couldn't fix something so basic.

I remain hopeful that if we get a Hell arc in the future, this will be fixed.

Bleach é bom mas...

Bleach é um dos shounens mais famosos desde que me conheço por gente e consigo dizer que a obra é muito boa, tem varios aspectos únicos de Bleach, como por exemplo o fato de cada arco ter como base uma língua, como por exemplo o arco dos espadas ser em espanhol e o arco dos quincys ser em alemão. É uma obra que desperta muitas emoções e inegavelmente está no pódio junto com Naruto, Dragon Ball e outros grandes shounens, porem o motivo da minha nota 6 se deve a dois pontos, o primeiro é que a arte do começo do mangá é simplesmente muito feia para meus olhos, mas isso é o ponto menor, o principal motivo para eu ter dado essa nota é muito simples: NÃO TEM EXPLICAÇÃO LOGICA PARA OS PERSONAGENS VOAREM! Eu me indigno toda vez que lembro disso pois temos um personagem que a Bankai dele é literalmente a habilidade de voar porem em um mundo onde todos ficam voando sem motivo nenhum isso é completamente inútil, é um furo de roteiro que me incomoda tremendamente a um ponto que não consigo ignorar. Enfim, se não fosse por esse problema a minha nota para Bleach poderia ser um 8 ou até mais, porem eu simplesmente não consigo deixar isso passar em uma obra que cria tantos conceitos e reflexões, não consigo entender como não conseguiram arrumar algo tão básico.

Sigo na esperança de que se futuramente tivermos um arco do inferno isso seja concertado.

Ah Bleach, the most middling of the big three. What can be said about Bleach that hasn't already been said? It's dragged out, repetitive, kind of a rip off of Yu Yu Hakusho, has a bland magic magic system, and Ichigo isn't what most writers would call a compelling character.
So what does it have going for it? It's cool factor? I was a teenager when Bleach was coming out, and managed to miss it at the time, so I don't have any nostalgia for its particular style, but my girlfriend watched it as it was broadcasting, and she just cringes whenever she sees the character ...
