Synopsis

In a fantasy world, there exist witches capable of curses nearly impossible to remove except by very few methods: receive a loving kiss from a prince, hope the wrathful witch has a change of heart, or attempt a third possibility.

Guideau and Ashaf are an unusual duo working for the Order of Magical Resonance, an organization that deals with any case related to magic. Guideau, a young woman with the eyes of a beast and a knack for rushing into things head-on, has a deeply personal grudge against witches. Ashaf, a refined yet enigmatic man who carries a coffin on his back, keeps his partner in check with a calm manner and presence of mind. Together, they investigate magical mysteries and crimes, all while looking for the witch who cursed Guideau.

The pair arrive in a city where they have heard a witch resides; however, much to their surprise, the people of the city consider the witch to be a hero protecting them. Both Guideau and Ashaf believe that only trouble follows a witch wherever she goes—but that remains to be seen here.

BackgroundMajo to Yajuu went on a two-month hiatus starting on January 22, 2023, due to the author's poor health. The hiatus was extended indefinitely after an official announcement on March 22, 2023.

The series has been published in English as The Witch and the Beast by Kodansha USA since October 27, 2020. It has also been published in Italian by Panini Comics since February 16, 2023.

A really good read if you aren't the type to anally pick apart the plot. (Coming from someone who has spent an ungodly amount of time reading and watching anime related media!)

Solid characters, pretty decent world building, and visually quite the work of art which always leaves me wanting MORE!!! Unfortunately the Author seems to be unwell as they have gone on hiatus a few times (wishing the best) so you may have to wait a hot minute for new chapters.

However, objectively I would rate this a solid 8/10. Would highly recommend giving it a read and would like to see more in the future ...

First off, the art is very well-done and executed, so no problems there. This manga had a strong start, with an interesting premise and characters you were intrigued to learn more about. However, once it reached the vampires arc, it started losing its focus and veering off-course, and by the time it reached volume 10, it was throwing new plot developments and characters out of left field each chapter and we still hadn't really learned all that much about our core duo and still had so many unanswered questions that had been foreshadowed previously. The plotline/premise is a lot like Dorohedoro and Undead Girl Murder Farce, except this is incredibly generic shonen action cringe that takes itself way too seriously while failing miserably to actually be seinen. It's a 1-note storyline to kill the generically evil witch yet lacks direction filling its story with pointless and repetitive magic baddie shonen arcs and numerous irrelevant sidestories and oneshots of irrelevant non-characters.

And the characters (especially the MCs) are all cardboard cutouts we learn almost nothing about and what we do learn amounts to: generically evil witch, generically persecuted good witch, generically evil executioners, generically good mages, generically angry MC, etc. ...
