Where does "The Nosebleed" come from?

Forever and ever, anime characters react to seeing something outrageous with a nosebleed. Does anyone know the origin/reason/meaning behind this?

It refers to one being sexually aroused...
down there, since blood rushes down there, they make it come out of the nose or something along those lines!

Um, I wanna say they're fun with the exception that one drop of blood can ruin a really nice shirt. Aside from that, they get you out of class. Hmm idk, they aren't the kinda thing you wanna have happen you, but they seem a bit like hitting the lottery cause you never know when it will happen. Its wierd, but idk.

Describing it as the reaction of the body to something one sees.
An unmistakable reaction. I suppose an erection is just as unmistakable, so the equivalency is there.

All this time it felt like an inside joke i never fully got :P

It's a superstition in some Asian countries. Excitement in general, not just sexual, causes your heart rate to increase, and that's where the superstition stems from. This superstition, the nosebleed, is just an easy device for communicating excitement in anime, much like how lines down the forehead is used to express awkwardness etc.
