i doubt anyone needs this advice, but i mainly purchase manga on online marketplaces. saved searches REALLY come in handy, so make sure to use them to their full potential on mercari, ebay, or other sites that have that feature. checking daily is optimal.
this sounds like a boomerish thing to do, but it really helps: do a google search of a particular book's ISBN or title and something may pop up. i found non non biyori volume 12 through this method, and it was a steal for only $20!
online stores/marketplaces i use and recommend:
ebay, amazon (mostly just from third party sellers), mercari, pangobooks, barnes&noble
i also recommend checking local used bookstores; i've found quite a few great deals through this. half price books is a great used bookstore chain that has quite a few locations in the US, i recommend giving them a visit.
p.s. i've really never spent more than $55 on a single volume. the $55 volume was an impulse purchase; the barnes&noble special edition of steins;gate 0 vol 1. hunting/frantically checking saved searches and buying second-hand really helps in the long run with saving money with this pricey collection hobby.
