Champignon no Majo

For as long as the locals can remember, the Champignon Witch, Luna, has lived hidden in her cottage on the outskirts of the kingdom, deep within the Black Forest. Despite her occasional trips into town to deliver medicine, no one dares to come close to her as poisonous mushrooms grow everywhere she goes. Furthermore, as a black witch, Luna must lay low to avoid execution, as the kingdom only acknowledges and accepts white witches.

Luna's lonely life turns around when she saves a dying boy named Lize. Upon learning that Lize is destined to become The End of All Things, Luna offers to become his teacher and stray him away from the path of evil. She must overcome her inexperience and create a great magician out of Lize to avoid his execution.

This show deserves more attention, especially for fans of Ancient Magus Bride. The dichotomy of the different witch clans are interesting and has a good amount of cute and chill moments. It's a modern day fairy tale and Luna's nature is pure at heart.

Originally it was an 8 ranking but a certain chain of events caused by a certain character swerved the whole story so it's not my #1 show for winter 2026. However, I look forward to season two and it deserves to be mentioned with modern witch stories.

As for the art, I actually really like it. ... It reminds me of the art in many first editions of fairy tales. It is colorful enough to embellish the budget. The music is vastly overlooked. And yes I actually like Luna's pet friends.

It is baffling why this show isn't ranked higher, maybe it's carryover from Frieren and Witch Hat Altier. Anime titles with "Witch" in them has been overloaded. There has been at least 5 shows over the last 10 years with the word "witch" in them. But to be honest, this one is a top 10 show for the witch category. Please check it out if you are curious.

Mixed Feelings

I really want to wholeheartedly enjoy this show, the vibes are right up my alley and I love how whimsical the magic is, doing stuff like "scattering your bad thoughts in the wind" it really exudes that fairy tale imagination. The fairy tale comparisons extend to the focus of personal termoil rather than action, which for me is OK because that's what I was up for when I chose to watch. My main gripes come down to the character of Lize. I don't mind the concept he brings to the table in a vaccum, but it really rubs me the wrong way how he becomes ... more or less the primary pov character after he is introduced, living Luna somewhat sidelined, I was expecting the focus to be on Luna's struggle to suddenly have to raise and train a kid, but instead we get Lize's long and frankly annoying self-loathing monologues. They're not all bad but they were the one main thing that was dragging the experience down for me personally at times, and I felt like it was significant enough of a drag that I cannot cleanly recommend this unless you're prepared to "get through" a few annoying parts to get back to good stuff, which is thankfully everything besides those monologues. I probably would watch another season if we got one, but I can definitely say that this one decision really squanders a lot of the show's potential. I hope that ideally in a future season, Lize character develops out of these monologues and they are no longer taking up so much time. 6/10, would be 8/10 without Lize's monologues

This anime feels like a case of wasted potential. It starts off strong, with a charming tone and an interesting premise, but it begins to stagnate midway through and only gets worse toward the end.

At a certain point, the pacing becomes unbearably slow and the story loses its sense of direction. What should have been meaningful development turns into drawn-out scenes filled with little to no progression. It ends up feeling like constant rambling rather than a narrative that’s actually moving forward.

The characters also take a noticeable downturn halfway through. Luna’s awkward, overly meek personality becomes more exhausting than endearing. Claude’s tsundere behavior quickly shifts ... from amusing to irritating. But the biggest issue is Lize, his repetitive internal monologues become insufferable over time. Ironically, his introduction marks the point where the anime really starts to decline.

Visually, the show begins with a charming art style and decent animation, but that quality doesn’t hold. As it goes on, it starts to feel noticeably low-budget and less engaging. One positive I can give is the changing outfits for the main characters each episode, it’s a refreshing detail. That said, the fashion itself isn’t particularly memorable, so it only goes so far.

The music is… fine. It’s not bad, but it’s nothing that stands out either.

The final episode is somewhat refreshing, but only because the story finally makes actual progress. Unfortunately, that just highlights how stagnant the rest of the series was. A finale shouldn’t feel like the first time something meaningful happens.

I’m not exaggerating when I say the pacing is one of the show’s biggest flaws. It’s filled with excessive dialogue and internal monologues that don’t contribute much to the overall story. That’s especially disappointing because this is the kind of series that’s supposed to rely heavily on its narrative and characters yet those are exactly the elements that end up dragging it down.

Given how poorly the second half was handled, I don't think this anime will get a second season. Which is unfortunate because it genuinely had the potential to be a charming, story-driven series, it just never lives up to it.
