Seiken Gakuin no Makentsukai

The battle against the forces of evil is nearing its end as the Undead King Leonis Death Magnus remains the sole survivor of the Dark Lords. Standing no chance alone against his enemies, Leonis seals himself deep underground with the goal of reincarnating a thousand years later and rebuilding his demonic army.

Within the span of a millennium, however, everything has changed. People no longer remember the great war that led to Leonis' defeat and instead face a new threat—the monstrous creatures known as Voids. Magical devices have replaced sorcery, and humans with special powers—manifested in the form of weapons called Holy Swords—train at the Excalibur Academy to fight the Voids.

Reborn as a 10-year-old human boy, Leonis meets Riselia Ray Crystalia, a dutiful girl who stumbles upon the ruins of his hibernation chamber. Believing that Leonis has amnesia, Riselia offers him guidance and enrolls him at the Excalibur Academy. Leonis still intends to take over the world, but he must first familiarize himself with a reality completely different from all he knows.

This anime begins with a Demon Lord named Leonis Death Magnus using a spell that would resurrect him a thousand years in the future. However, the resurrection is only partially successful, and he returns in the body of his 10 year old self. Furthermore, his goal of conquering humanity is made much more difficult by the fact that the world has changed considerably to the point none of his old assumptions apply. To put it simply, he comes from a world of fantasy but was resurrected into a world of magic powered sci-fi. Furthermore, the threat to humanity is no longer demons, but rather some ... extradimensional force known as Voids and humanity no longer fights directly with magic, but rather with special weapons known as Holy Swords.

Leo’s first order of business is to gain a better understanding of human society, and as a part of that he ends up joining a platoon of Holy Swordmen, or rather Holy Swordswomen considering they’re all cute girls. At this point this anime sound a lot like a typical isekai, but that’s not quite true. Rather, this falls squarely into the harem battle academy genre that was really popular in the 2010s but has since gone out of fashion. The world building is pretty typical for one of those, with a mysterious force that only teenagers are capable of combatting and everything else is centered around supporting and expanding on that premise.

The plot too for the most part is proceeding how such series usually go for the most part. There’s some grand mystery that is slowly being chipping away at, but as of yet it hasn’t made all that much progress. The ending to the season does try to give a finale type feeling and does produce an ending that’s somewhat satisfying, but as is unavoidable, the season ends with loads of plot threads very openly hanging unfinished. It’s an interesting enough plot, but nothing special. The only particularly noticeable thing when it comes to the plot is the pacing. The first arc which corresponds to the first light novel takes up six episodes and feels pretty slow. On the other hand, the second arc which corresponds to the second light novel takes up only two episodes and felt rushed. And the last arc which corresponds to the third light novel takes up four episodes, and felt properly paced. That unevenness was definitely a misfire.

Still, at this point in such series the plot doesn’t really matter all that much. The focus is moreso on the characters. This anime does a well in that regard, though it’s handling things a bit differently from most battle academies. A single cour is enough for most similar anime to get through introducing all of the main heroines, providing some background on them, and starting their character arcs. This anime goes in a different direction. It does start off the stories of two of the heroines, Riselia and Regina, and each have a solid enough introduction arc and come out reasonably likable. But it provides essentially nothing on the other two, Elfine and Sakuya, who as of the ending are a complete mystery.

Instead of the heroines, Leo has a much larger focus with his background and motivations being explored much deeper than they usually are at this point in most such anime. Overall, he’s a pretty fun MC. He is a combination of the intelligence of a wise old man but the instincts of a ten year old boy, which manifests in lots of amusing ways. Of course this includes how he interacts with the heroines, but also includes some of this other antics, such as as his attempts to portray himself as a demon lord ending up feeling very chuuni-ish. He’s also making progress in a simple but clear character arc centered around him coming to care for the humans around him.

He also has pretty solid relationship development with Riselia, though nothing much with the other heroines. The biggest issue is that he’s keeping who he is a secret from the rest of them, and even when his hand is forced by needing to explain things to Riselia, he dances around the truth and doesn’t really tell her much. I actually like such mechanics most of the time as I love characters that play the fool. However, here it felt underutilized in terms of adding anything of value, but did serve as a roadblock for things to progress in terms of relationship development.

The art and animation are decent enough, but with some major caveats. The biggest is some really bad 3DCG in the last few episodes. There was 3D CG earlier on as well, but it fit in better and wasn’t as noticeable comparatively. The designs overall are decent enough, but none of them are particularly memorable. The OP and ED are also pretty solid in terms of the songs and visuals but nothing too special. The soundtrack also worked well enough but isn’t particularly remarkable.

tl;dr: A solid but typical start to a harem battle academy series.

Mixed Feelings

One of many anime that would've benefitted had it not been for this 12 episode standard. I haven't read the original source material so I don't whether or not the things I'm unsatisfied with the anime is covered in it.

Focuses too much on our protagonist and main character, Leonis and Riselia. Did try to expand on the lore of the other platoon members however it feels very short and just thrown out there for the sake of it being mentioned. And of course, while understandably so, our protagonist is overpowered. I would've passed it off if his sorceries had shown more variety before having to ... pull out Dainsleif 3 times.

I started this, was disappointed, dropped it, and now I picked it up again and finished it. I left the original / preliminary review unchanged, and the rest of the review will be at the bottom.

### Previous preliminary review (5/10 after 6 episodes)

The first two episodes seemed kinda interesting, the premise was definitely not new but it did seem like it could be enjoyable, but it slowly became more and more boring until I couldn't get motivated to watch another episode, and eventually dropped it.

It's not the worst thing I've seen, but it has zero redeeming qualities and is a mix of all the older ... popular series with demon lords (and maybe a few more), taking from them 3+ bad parts for every 1 good part. The result is a run-of-the-mill story, with poor animation, poor story, uninteresting characters, uninteresting magic, uninteresting everything.

Maybe it's worth a watch if you have nothing else to watch, but I'd honestly start my 4th rewatch of Overlord rather than keep watching this. Then again I'm a no-lifer, so I might end up finishing this at some point, who knows.

### Review after finishing (4/10)

So... I do a 4th rewatch of Overlord, and there are a few more weeks until the next season's series are completed, so I came back and finished it. My disappointment only grew.

By far the most annoying thing was the MC. You have this demon lord (adult, seemingly in his ~30s when he died, and probably "lived" many more after that) from a thousand years ago who was resurrected back into a 10-year-old child. At times he acts, thinks, and speaks like an IKEA demon lord, but for the rest of the series he acts, thinks, and speaks like the flustered teen stereotype MC you see in every anime. He's so "cruel" he doesn't bat an eye when someone dies in front of him even though he could save them... but obviously protects the poor orphans and then attempts to "save face" by trying to explain to his old subordinates that he's still unchanged and has some reason. Contrary to Overlord, this duality doesn't seem humorous, it's just in poor taste. But okay.

Magic (modern or old) is never really explained, not much lore and background is there either except a few (admittedly, somewhat interesting) pre-reincarnation flashbacks. It's a 12-episode series, so let's not be too hard on this point. Based on the story so far, some stuff would likely have been revealed later on and it's what the MC is trying to figure out, but there are still some places that could use improvement.

Animation, sound, dialogue are all poor. Not the worst I've seen, but at most average, likely a bit below. A few animations were reused too (**thrice**!), without even bothering to make even a minor change - I guess the budget of the last episode was half that of previous ones. Music is a bit above, even if misplaced or exaggerated at some points, but maybe 6-7? CGI is on the bad side too (think Overlord skeletons). The VA-ing is okay-ish but not consistent and maybe has some sync issues too. Character design is exactly average for the main cast, and very bad for the enemy mobs.

Maybe I'll rewatch an old favorite to clear the bad aftertaste this has left. Are you sure you've rewatched your favorites enough times? Even if you have, maybe just pick another genre you don't usually watch and try that instead? Unless all else fails, don't even bother with this one.
