Violet Evergarden

The Great War finally came to an end after four long years of conflict; fractured in two, the continent of Telesis slowly began to flourish once again. Caught up in the bloodshed was Violet Evergarden, a young girl raised for the sole purpose of decimating enemy lines. Hospitalized and maimed in a bloody skirmish during the War's final leg, she was left with only words from the person she held dearest, but with no understanding of their meaning.

Recovering from her wounds, Violet starts a new life working at CH Postal Services after a falling out with her new intended guardian family. There, she witnesses by pure chance the work of an "Auto Memory Doll," amanuenses that transcribe people's thoughts and feelings into words on paper. Moved by the notion, Violet begins work as an Auto Memory Doll, a trade that will take her on an adventure, one that will reshape the lives of her clients and hopefully lead to self-discovery.

I loved Violet Evergarden from the very first episode.

A simple idea: someone who grew up in war is trying to live a normal life right after it has ended. It’s a very interesting premise, and it works very well with the fact that Violet doesn’t really understand humanity—after all, as I said, she grew up in war. That alone already won me over.

Someone trying to be human and failing. And in the end, failing is human too! The fact that she works as an Auto Memory Doll only reinforces the idea that she has to deal with the feelings she has and understand others she ... doesn’t comprehend. By far, my favorite episode is episode 10. Man, I cried hard watching that.

Violet is a unique experience for me. I wish I could forget the anime so that one day I could watch it again.

Mixed Feelings

A typewriter is a tool that takes an input from the fingers and puts it onto a piece of paper. In Violet Evergarden such a device is called an "Auto Memoir Doll", the term later transitioned to refer to the human ghostwriters who used that typewriter. The job of these 'dolls' was much more sophisticated that that of a mere tool, it was to decipher emotions. A soldier is also a tool that takes a command and executes it. Violet, our protagonist, was a soldier. This story is about transition of this soldier into a doll.

The show is set in a recently post-war world that ... is still healing from the burn marks that warfare causes. Due to this, the people were largely illiterate, leading to the boom of the doll profession. Throughout the series, Violet, explores this world and consequently explores her own burn marks. It is a pseudo anthology, bringing a self-contained story with each episode. Violet visits clients that have their own emotional conflicts and by the end of that 24 minute mark, they get explored and in a way, resolved.

This is a story about Violet and the world that Violet lives in, where all the characters act like a mirror to her. Once an episode ends, it's Violet who is back again at the spotlight. It's as if the people that she interacts with are writing emotions on an empty vessel. The recurring characters act as an audience, watching her grow and become her own person.

The anime doesn't try to be realistic when it comes to animation; instead, it seeks beauty, be it the gorgeous character designs or the brilliant backgrounds. The visual style truly is doll-like, almost too perfect.

Despite all of this, the flaws still surface. There's the 'ick' factor, romance between a man and a child, which also happens to be the central emotional anchor of the story. The show ocasionally suffers from excessive melodrama, combining the extravagant orchestra and the "too perfect" art to forcefully wring tears from tragic tropes. The finale can feel like it only exists to give Violet a misplaced action scene (also, Violet is overpowered beyond belief). Due to the show being too beautiful it ignores the gritty side of war and that breaks realism in some parts of the story.

Overall, it's a flawed piece of art that prioritizes beauty and manages to deliever a compelling story about Violet and Violet alone.

This series has very smooth animation, decent cinematography, and uses scene transitions in interesting ways. In terms of anime as an artistic craft, there's a lot to recommend here. It certainly looks very expensive, and it's easy to tell that there's been a lot of care put into each frame.

The big problem is with the story, you see. And the characters. And the pacing. They're just... not very good.

Admittedly, a lot of this is merely my own personal taste -- I don't like melodrama, and this is a Melodrama with a capital M. There's a character crying in almost every episode. There's *multiple* ... bouts of crying in over half the episodes. A few episodes had over half a dozen instances of crying, and in some cases it felt like the story was moving from one instance of characters busting out the waterworks to the next, like a chain-smoker that doesn't know how to quit.

Beyond my personal taste, I think episodic melodrama is especially hard to do well. Characters are introduced but typically only have a single episode (only 22 short minutes!) to work through their issues. This flatly isn't enough time to really do much, and the resolution often consists of just a single pep-talk, which leads to a double-bind:
Option 1) the issue is so facile that a single pep-talk really could realistically solve it, but that makes the characters seem like childish babies for having an issue in the first place.
Option 2) the issue is bigger, so it seems like a problem a real person could have, but then it's ludicrous for that type of thing to be resolved in a single pep talk.
The end result was that the melodrama felt somewhere between "fake" and "annoying". Maybe this type of show would be a tearjerker for teenage girls that score 100% Feeling on their MBTI tests, but for me it fell completely and utterly flat.

Furthermore, the show isn't helped by the protagonist Violet being unlikable. She starts out comically awful in a way that many anime protagonists do so the storywriter can easily show character progression. Her blundering in social situations verges on severe autism, then she "grows" into a regular human that can think for herself and who has normal emotions, but this is mostly expressed through crying. Ugh.

Not a fan.
