Blood-C: The Last Dark

Okay, wow. After the mess in the series, I didn’t expect this movie to hit that hard — but it seriously did. Blood-C: The Last Dark felt like everything the anime could’ve been but never was. The moment it started, I knew they weren’t playing around this time.

The gore? Clean. Brutal. Beautiful. The fight scenes had weight, the choreography looked tight, and Saya felt way more grounded and had more purpose. Honestly, I’ve always liked her as a character, but here she owned every second of screen time. Dark, deadly, but with a quiet depth that finally made sense.

Animation-wise? Massive step up. They really brought ... their A-game with the visuals. The night settings, cityscapes, and those slicing scenes? Chef’s kiss. It felt polished in a way the series never even came close to.

But the biggest surprise for me was the story flow — it actually felt like it knew where it was going this time. Still cryptic at times, sure, but way more coherent. I wasn’t sitting there confused or bored; I was locked in and enjoying every second of Saya wrecking everything in her path.

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting to rate this as high as I did. But credit where it’s due. If the original anime had this energy from the start, we’d be talking about Blood-C way differently.

Akame Without Narrative Depth!

Blood-C: The Last Dark concludes the story begun in the Blood-C anime, but unfortunately continues to carry many of the problems already present in the previous work. The result is a film that, despite some clear merits, remains stuck in mediocrity.

One of the most positive points is, without a doubt, the improvement in animation. The film presents a noticeable technical leap compared to the anime. The scenes are more fluid, the settings are more detailed, and the characters have much better-crafted movement. The fights also gain greater visual impact, with more dynamic and violent choreography. Visually, it's a very pleasant film to ... watch and demonstrates greater care in production.

A very striking change from the anime is in the personality of the protagonist, Saya. During the series, she was presented as an extremely kind, innocent, and even somewhat silly character at times. However, in the film, this facet practically disappears. The Saya we see here is cold, determined, and completely focused on her revenge. She seems to have abandoned any vestige of naiveté to become someone driven solely by the goal of destroying those who ruined her life. This change even makes sense when we consider everything the character has been through. The problem is that this transformation isn't well-constructed narratively. There's no gradual development showing this psychological change happening. The viewer simply receives a different version of the character, which ends up causing a certain strangeness. Still, I must admit that I liked this new approach. The problem is that it ends up being very reminiscent of the archetype of characters like Akame: a cold and lethal warrior, but without a narrative construction strong enough to support this personality.

Regarding the film's narrative, it's even more organized than the anime's. Here there's a clearer plot, with connected events and defined objectives. The story finally tries to make sense of many of the elements presented previously. The script works better and tries to create a more direct conflict between protagonist and antagonist. However, this effort ends up running into an inevitable problem: the film is totally dependent on the anime that precedes it. Because the story development in Blood-C was extremely weak and confusing, the film ends up having to spend some of its time trying to correct or justify previous narrative decisions.

One of the elements that really surprised me positively was Fumito, the antagonist. Unlike many generic villains, he stands out for his manipulative personality. He's not the typical villain who demonstrates evil all the time. On the contrary, his way of acting is subtle, calculating, and extremely manipulative. He controls situations and the people around him with a frightening naturalness. This makes him a much more interesting character than most of the cast.

This characteristic is also reflected in his ending. The ending he receives is bitter and consistent with his personality, something that contributes greatly to the impact of the story's conclusion. It's not an explosive or cathartic ending, but rather a conclusion that matches the type of character he is.

Overall, Blood-C: The Last Dark has some clear qualities, mainly in the animation and the construction of the antagonist. However, it suffers greatly from depending on a previous, extremely problematic work. As a result, the film doesn't stand well on its own, and the series' flaws directly affect the experience here.

Even though I liked certain aspects, it's still difficult to enthusiastically recommend this film. For those who have already seen the anime, it might be interesting as a conclusion to the story. But for those who are not yet familiar with the work, it's probably not worth going through all the frustration of the previous season just to get to this point.

Uma Akame sem profundidade narrativa!

Blood-C: The Last Dark encerra a história iniciada no anime Blood-C, mas infelizmente continua carregando muitos dos problemas que já estavam presentes na obra anterior. O resultado é um filme que, apesar de alguns méritos claros, ainda fica preso no mediano.

Um dos pontos mais positivos é, sem dúvida, a melhora na animação. O filme apresenta um salto técnico perceptível em relação ao anime. As cenas são mais fluidas, os cenários são mais detalhados e os personagens possuem uma movimentação muito mais bem trabalhada. As lutas também ganham um impacto visual maior, com coreografias mais dinâmicas e violentas. Visualmente, é um filme muito agradável de assistir e demonstra um cuidado maior na produção.

Uma mudança bastante marcante em relação ao anime está na personalidade da protagonista, Saya. Durante a série, ela era apresentada como uma personagem extremamente gentil, inocente e até um pouco boba em alguns momentos. No entanto, no filme essa faceta praticamente desaparece. A Saya que vemos aqui é fria, determinada e completamente focada em sua vingança. Ela parece ter abandonado qualquer resquício de ingenuidade para se tornar alguém movido apenas pelo objetivo de destruir quem arruinou sua vida. Essa mudança até faz sentido quando consideramos tudo o que a personagem passou. O problema é que essa transformação não é bem construída narrativamente. Não existe um desenvolvimento gradual que mostre essa mudança psicológica acontecendo. O espectador simplesmente recebe uma versão diferente da personagem, o que acaba causando certa estranheza. Ainda assim, devo admitir que gostei dessa nova abordagem. O problema é que ela acaba lembrando muito o arquétipo de personagens como Akame: uma guerreira fria e letal, mas sem uma construção narrativa suficientemente forte para sustentar essa personalidade.

No que diz respeito à narrativa do filme, ela é até mais organizada do que a do anime. Aqui existe uma trama mais clara, com eventos conectados e objetivos definidos. A história finalmente tenta dar sentido a muitos dos elementos apresentados anteriormente. O roteiro funciona melhor e tenta criar um conflito mais direto entre protagonista e antagonista. Porém, esse esforço acaba esbarrando em um problema inevitável: o filme depende totalmente do anime que o precede. Como o desenvolvimento da história em Blood-C foi extremamente fraco e confuso, o filme acaba tendo que gastar parte do seu tempo tentando corrigir ou justificar decisões narrativas anteriores.

Um dos elementos que realmente me surpreendeu positivamente foi Fumito, o antagonista. Diferente de muitos vilões genéricos, ele se destaca pela sua personalidade manipuladora. Ele não é o típico vilão que demonstra maldade o tempo todo. Pelo contrário, sua forma de agir é sutil, calculista e extremamente manipuladora. Ele controla as situações e as pessoas ao seu redor com uma naturalidade assustadora. Isso o torna um personagem muito mais interessante do que grande parte do elenco.

Essa característica também se reflete em seu desfecho. O final que ele recebe é amargo e coerente com sua personalidade, algo que contribui bastante para o impacto da conclusão da história. Não é um final explosivo ou catártico, mas sim um encerramento que combina com o tipo de personagem que ele é.

No geral, Blood-C: The Last Dark possui algumas qualidades claras, principalmente na animação e na construção do antagonista. No entanto, ele sofre muito por depender de uma obra anterior extremamente problemática. Como resultado, o filme não se sustenta bem de forma independente, e os erros da série acabam afetando diretamente a experiência aqui.

Mesmo tendo gostado de certos aspectos, ainda é difícil recomendar esse filme com entusiasmo. Para quem já viu o anime, pode ser interessante como conclusão da história. Mas para quem ainda não conhece a obra, provavelmente não vale a pena passar por toda a frustração da temporada anterior apenas para chegar até aqui.

How did they manage to make a 2 hour long movie of Blood-C and mange to have less than 5 minutes of action? The original was all about over the top blood and gore, & this had absolutely none it. Saya swung her sword a total of 15 times in this movie. FIFTEEN, and looked incredibly bored whilst doing so, which is fair, there was never anyone that could put up a fight for some reason despite the overwhelming amount of world ending horrors she fought in the original. 2 filler fights in-between 1h40m of new characters talking about nothing but generic anime tropes, and ... an anti-climactic finale that has us watching a fully cg-rendered monster, building itself up over the span of 9 minutes. Saya steps up, takes a singular swing....And kills him in 30 seconds flat. It's tragically apparent they had absolutely nothing in the bank to fund this, so perhaps the story is decently written at least? (No)

How did you manage to create characters more unbelievable and unlikable than the original cast? You're telling me 3 schoolkids and 1 pre-schooler who's only skills are being "computer hackers" managed not only to survive, but to outwit the big bad who had power enough to control most of tokyo, literally wiped out thousands of people in Blood-c, had access to Elder Bairns, years of research, Saya's blood AND an elite hit squad, then squandered it all for.....I don't even know. The plot was such a mess I felt I understood less after having watched the movie

How was any of this greenlit?

I get the anime was incredibly polarising for fans of the original Blood, but who was this even aimed at? There was nothing resembling Blood-C here, with the over the top action and gore, ridiculous yet amusing plot and crazy plot-twists I so thoroughly enjoyed, even if it wasn't good it was certainly a mindless guilty pleasure for many. I didn't expect much from the movie, a bit of a rushed if over the top revenge story that was full of blood and action perhaps. I didn't expect.....This
