923 AD - the prequel to a saga ...

It was Viking time again! 28mm, Hail Caesar, Nomans, Vikings and Avars, all from Barts beautiful (and definitively outnumbering mine by now) and newly enlarged dark age miniature collection presented in a battle on Houseparty again! The scenario / terrain and photos were courtesy of Bart. The Viking, Norman, Avars rebellion, fully set up on one table, was to be completely squashed by the Kings arriving household guard and then these valiant knights were soon to be supported by two infantry divisions of more normans... I took the household cavalry of course!

So Bart had the rebels and the first move, I diced turn 3 for my army to come in, and we shuffled a bit tactical nearer to the havoc line ... I was a bit lucky so on end of turn 3 I had all my retinue on the table, AND as our customary dark age games are, shall we say, a bit more reckless then the rest (if thats possible), I just charged in with my Norman milites, not even bothered if there is a Viking shield wall in between.

The impact was as suspected, heavy losses on Barts side, Vikings pushed back, Avars dropped out of their saddles, archers being ridden down! Multiple occasions for my leaders and King to die, but it wasn‘t meant to be! Then at the end I did what every HC player does I rolled blunders ... that somewhat put my set up in a tactical mess and it was a bit difficult to get the whole circus on the right foot again.

At the end of the loveley slaughter, I definitively didn‘t managed to kill ALL, but maybe that was a high mark for an objective, BUT I managed to kill half of the avars, and nearly all of the rebellious normans.

So we decided to call it a draw. Any self-respecting dark age leader would have, in this situation offered the Vikings more land and substituition to solve the problem for just about a generation... this is where Bart had the idea that this battle could be the prequel for our long running dark age saga of Raoul and Rolund! It was a lot of fun and we will continue the saga/hack&slay for sure in the future.

The battlefield

The Kings cavalry

The Kings infantry (to come later 1d3 turns)

The rebels

The initial set up

I formed a crescent to attack

The Vikings formed a shield wall

Shuffling to get nearer

First clash of lances

More norman knights clashing in ...

being bounced back from a shield wall

more clashing vs archers ouch!

my miltes getting charged by vikings

... and killed in that process

retreat on all flanks

but for a second wave of charges!

even into flanks of archers ... ouch ouch!

and the Viking shield wall again, why not!

... hm maybe because they are tougher?

still the archers and infantry suffer

the battlefield was a bit in a tactical mess after my troops arrived

that was when we had to stop ...

Rolund and Henri II, the Saga _ the end of Luitpolt the Fat

After Henri the Red was mortally wounded, Bishop Luitpolt the Fat, promised Rolund a riches in gold for keeping his Vikings under control, so Rolund left the fiefdom in peace. But the bishop never paid, as they do, so Rolund vowed to come back and sack the Bishoprics town called Fetthausen.
Word was sent to Henri II, son of Henri the Red, and the town got prepared for battle, men and mouse. Problem only that the Bishops money went into building a church rather then finishing an urgently needed town wall. But then the shield walls of the enemy already appeared on the hills of the surrounding fields. This is where our battle starts (28mm, Hail Caesar), my peasant army and the infantry of Henri and some help of Mikes milites, vs Barts Norman and viking army that grows ever more terrifyingly larger, Alisdair helped out as Barts Duke and led his men over the river.

The 6 units of Henris II Milites would come in at turn (1d6+1).

It was as always a lopsided affair. We tried our best to hold the barbarians at bay, but soon the hordes washed of the river and Luitpolt the truchsess of the bishop got killed in the early cavalry fights. Then the Vikings swarmed towards the wall and attacked straight away. Minutes later the bowmen of the town lay dead at the (tiny) wall of Fetthausen. Our outer flank was soon collapsing, we send the peasant before the horses of the on-charging milites to save the armoured soldiers ... it worked!!, soon Rolund would be stuck in a house-to-house fight, haha! ... but then some elite berserker Viking mob jumped over the wall and massacred the bishops soldier retinue in no time. Unfortunately Luitpolt was with them and did not survive.

That left us leaderless and chaos soon replaced discipline ... but then in the distance, some of the guards could see riders ... something glittering far away – but they/it vanished again, leaving the town to its own, surely brutish fate... (which of course we cannot display as it would offend rightfully everybodys taste).

What happened to the milites that were promised to rescue Fetthausen? What will happen to Rolund‘s men after the looting of the town? How quick can Vikings be awaken and battle ready after some drunken night? ... we will see in the next episode ....

All events, of course, are truthfully told according to the gods and church codex in this oecommenical and inclusive saga of the Markgraf.

Initial set up

Rolfs Viking dogs decending the hill

Rolfs retinue

The Bowmen of Fetthausen

and their peasant army

The first clash of Milites on horseback

Mike tries to hold the flank against the Norman wave that is pushing over the river

The shieldwall of the Bishops knights on the gap where the townwall still is just "work in progress"

Bishop Luitpolt, der Fette, hiding behind his 'Dienstmannen‘

The brave bowmen watching the Vikings approach

... the Norse men at the "Furt"

Luidolf‘s, der Picklige, last stand ...
Luidolf, the bishops military provost is no more ...

and the Vikings are at the "wall" ...
... and now inside the town!!! Rette sich wer kann!

leaderless on the outer flank the peasants hurry together ...
while the knights retreat to town

there the unbelievable happens the bishop and his knights get killed!

while the peasant flank gets ridden down ...

there the gate guards pointing towards something in the distance ...?

Rolf and Henri The Red – SAGA continues ... for some ...

Bart and me opted for a frollicking Dark Age, 28mm, Hail Caesar battle feast, as Bart finished some of his new Norman troops and milites. And you know that new toy soldiers cannot be denied their new entry!

Alistair was also press ganged into the havoc, partly as Henry the Red and his Ottonians while I delightfully opted for the peasantry and the supporting clerical role this time, hoping to recreate the success of Alistairs last bishopric performance.

As we recall last time Rolund and his Viking fiends were massively beaten as Henri followed them before their forces could unite. Now the Bishop and Henri were hunting down the remnants of Rolund to his "Markgraf" county border, not knowing that he already had sent (and paid!!) for reinforcements. Not only his men but also a new Viking associates. The trap was set.

We were out numbered and out classed on a battle field that looked much like a cross between Agincourt and Cannae, but that would not deter any red blooded knight, certainly not Henri! So the built up was slowly and mercilessly. Bart advanced with his foot troops and began to pepper our archers and foot knights. And the bishops peasants took their time to turn up.

Then came the first cavalry clash and the first part of Rolunds milites got a severe hammering. But that left Henries milites quite weak and battered as well, so the upcoming second division of Rolunds horse spelt doom for any Ottonian hopes of victory.

Then the trap sprung and another foe appeared in the rear of our army – more Vikings! Our soft Peasant army was literally melting away. Then the last charge of the battle came and Rolund clashed with his fresh troops again into Henries milites and slaughtered them comprehensively. Henri got wounded two times and was just able to retreat off the battle field.

In an act of merciful self censorship, we are unable to show images of the conclusion and aftermath of the battle as they were too brutal to present them in front of any audience.

Henri‘s reign will end soon, nearly mortally wounded and surrounded by field medics, his fate is sealed. Will his son Henri II take up the fight or will fate of the border realm or the Emperor himself surprise us?
... we will vow to truthfully and continuously report the deeds of this Saga ... watch closely!

Barts Norman Cavalry

Bart centre forces the archer and the infantry

... More of it ...

... and Barts NEW Norman Cavalry!!!

Rolund marches forward with his "Mannen"

Rolunds centre forms at the river
Henri the Reds centre has difficulties of forming somewhat of a line

But Henris Cavalry waits for its moment to charge
Finally the peasant army of Bishop "Luitdolf the Pimpled" arrives on field!

The two Norman/Ottonian armies are drawn up and poised to clash
Then before the Rolund horse could unite Henri the Red lures Rolund into a clash

Rolund has never fought down these East Franconian milites

slowly Henris army forms up

Badly beaten Rolunds milites retreat

But then ... what is this ... Rolunds Pagan allies, the Vikings attack the peasants rear guard

Wild and heavily armoured veteran vikings against unarmoured peasants ... the outcome is predictable
Yet again the other units of Rolund fresh new milites clash into Henris battered knights

... and surround them in a fierce fight

Henri is wounded two times and barely gets away with his own life
