Rolfs Last Stand, At 850 Ad, somewhere near Normandy

It was about time to let the Normans and Vikings out again, so me and Bart decided to continue the "Markgraf" saga of Rolund and Henri the Red. (28mm, Hail Caesar).
In the last battle Henri (Norman), played by my, had secured a victory over the combined forces of Rolund (Norman) and Rolf (Viking), played by Bart. So this time Rolfs Vikings will have to make a final last stand surrounded by the Henri‘s Retinue and the low life follwers of Bishop Luitpolt Der Pickelige (the pimpeled). After a couple of turns Rolund rescue party will arrive.

We had the number of turns rolled secretly by another club member so that no one of us could possibly know when the forces will arrive. Unfortunately for Bart, he rolled the maximum number ...

So there and then enfolded a truly medieval massacre as my milites stormed the hill and attacked the Viking shield walls. (Note for next time: we will improve the shield walls and make them tougher against Horse attacks). Rolfs Vikings had no chance and were ridden down even before the Bishops rabble could run up the hill to join. (ah OK, some of the peasants were actually of help and attacked, but we edit this out of our Saga). Only the Berserkers could flee over the river and make a last stand.

Henri's army was a bit in disarray at that moment and proceeded to plough forward more or less successful. this was when Rolund‘s Forces (first the cavalry) arrived (on the 6th turn!!!). Too late for the late but great Rolf, he died on the hill, but not late enough to give Henri a bit of his own medicine.

The Bishop, played by Alistair, rumbled along with his peasants, and did a pretty good job of actually bind and contain large parts of Rolund‘s army. While my Normans charged downhill into the counter-charging Knights of Rolund. It was brutal, I lost one unit of Heavy Milites, but in the end Henri prevailed - victory again!!! Normandy is secured for the King again!

So he will rest and lick his wounds right there in a camp with his retinue and the rabble of the Bishop who survived this massacre.

Rolund won‘t come back again so quickly after these two defeats, or will he? Rumours have it that he has again secured new allies, amongst them Raoul the Insane, a particular nasty fellow, even with the (very, very low) standards of his contemporaries ...

Initial deployment on smaller table

Henri the Red and followers

The Bishop and crew

Rolfs Vikings

Rolund‘s Rescue party off table

Rolfs Viking tease with a war cry

Then came the charge of my knights

The wave of the peasants

Rolfs situation is getting untenable

the last Vikings getting crushed between two fronts

Henri is hunting the last Berserkers

Then Rolund‘s Cavalry comes in

Heavy Milites as well

So we must charge! (this is THE image of my understanding of a Norman charge)

... downhill into the little river

one of my knight units is gone, dead in the water

my archer sluggin behind

all scramble downhill!

the peasants advance ...

Some bloody tin can opening in Normandy shortly after 900AD

The realm has long fallen apart and descended into chaos. Raiders are threatening from all sides, the Saracens, the Magyars and the Vikings, are plundering and penetrating deep into the heart of the once proud civilisation. France is long in the state of perpetual unrest and civil war. The Vikings have festered in the "Normandy", a piece of coast now called after them. Some of them were given titles and land that they swore an oath of allegiance to the King and Emperor (who ever that might turn out to be...). Other "dukes" though are envious of their likes' power and status and no one else is more prone to feuds than the Normans of said region themselves.

Henri the Red is holding a large swath of land and is deemed a favourite of the King. Who has asked him to sent his best men to aid to decide the fight for the title of the Emperor. But that left Henri‘s power base too lightly defended.

So Rolund, also a Norman noble, with old family ties in Danemark wants to seize the opportunity to enlarge his fiefdom with a little help of his cousin Rolf and his Viking mercenary war bands.  Henri is only able to raise the rest of his retinue and calls for the levies of his lands ...

So we dabble again with a little help of Hail Caesar into the 28mm Dark Age again, Bart playing Rolund, the Norman ursurper and his Danish helper, Rolf, while I‘m defending King and Emperor with my Normans and a bunch (140) peasants/levies. Roland and Rolf were two armies and Rolf would after loosing two units (of 4) either just defend or totally leave the field. basically we both fielded our complete collections ... nice feeling ...

Bart first stayed in perfect line while I tried a pincer movement with my two flanks, in my soft centre I had my bishop with 140 peasants ... some arrows and some shield clattering later my Commander unleashed the Cavalry and a Norman metal clash was developing over the tiny river on my right flank. At the same my levies advanced bravely in the centre. They did‘t have armour or shields, so no morale save, so each of Bart‘s hits were actually casualties, ouch.

Then on the left, my Norman Infantry met the Viking Berserker supported Hirdmen in a fabulous "Shield wall" clash!!!! We decided that "Shield wall" was another useful rule just for all Vikings or Heavy infantry Normans. Movement would be halved, attacks against it would suffer -1 melee and ranged weapons, and it would give an extra +1 to morale saves and act as an extra support in the battle resolve. Still we suffered immense losses, but both walls would hold.

In fact even the "very bloody" cavalry exchange on the right flank (just one units with 5 casualties standing at each side), just led to an overall draw. I defeated 1 unit more than Bart and even after a very nasty blunder one of his Normans are nearly off board, we still agreed on a draw – my soft centre of peasant was just that and slowly melting away... a good buffer and as permeable as a giant amoeba, but not with long lasting standing power.

Ah, and Bart nearly lost his Rolund, he got wounded after his Norman Knights were skewered and floating down the river ...

And nearly a novum, ten minutes before ten, Bart wanted to "withdraw" with his last cavalry unit!!! Unheard of! So I persuaded him to attack, he lost, hey thats life!

The left flank of my Norman knights on foot

and my right flank with the heavy horse

The complete set up at start
Bart right flank with the vicious Vikings!
and the archery centre
And his right flank with his knights
First two milites clash!
Even one directly in the river!

Casualties are mounting, knights are flying off the horses!
meanwhile the fluffy centre advance

The battle in mid-swing

My heavy infantry‘s first ever shield wall action!

Bart‘s counter attack on my centre
it suffers but it holds (somehow)
The shield walls are pushing

With the Lord clearly in our favour

or not ... in the distance more Vikings gather ...

Barts last Norman cavalry disappeared ...

The Bishop of Mainz and the Duke of Swabia defeat the forces of the Eastern Markgraf around 943

There was uprising and revolt in the east of the realm of the regnum teutonicorum, some recently christianised upstart of a Marchbaron(played by Bart) trying to enter the lands of the Franconians. So the Bishop of Mainz (me) with his Infantry was supported and led by the Duke of Swabia (Peter) with all his veteran milites, to beat the shit out of the ursurper and drive him back to the dark lands where he came from with the help of our 28mm figures and the notorious Hail Caesar rules. We all had one CinC and 3 sub-commander and 9 units. The Holy Roman Empire had the upper hand on milites and Bart the evil Baron, had more crossbowmen, but we allowed him this truly unfair advantage -  therefore in turn, we just came up with no plan at all and just attacked!
Initially Bart deployed partially behind a River (more a rivulet - an 3" obstacle), and we gained the 1st turn. Peters Cavalry swayed and met Barts milites half way in an epic clash of chainmail and breaking lances! While I marched forward for Christi and shot some of the Eastern Ex-Saxonians.

Then Bart counter-attacked and it developed into the usual bloody mess of Norman style metal havoc. Barts crossbow men traversed the rivulet, but he kept his main heavy infantry on the other side of the water. Usually the ones who keeps calm and some reserves wins these medieval massacres, but not this time. I attacked and stood fast against Barts counterattack, meanwhile Peter managed to emerge victorious out of this messy flank bloodbath.

That was when the dastardly evil Baron Bart accused Peter of cheating! Technically they both got carried away and Peter lost one round of casualties on one unit, but that didn't broke the mould and as Peter was new to the rules, we decided to excommunicate Bart and sent him back into the Lausitz - I cannot think of a more severe punishment!

This Battle report is the only truth because the Holy Spirit told me so!!

It was all in all an very enjoyable game - the winning against Bart was just a bonus.

His review will probably be biased differently, but hey, that are the pitfalls of true mediaevistic!

The Mainzer contingent
The initial deployment
The forces of evil
The defender of christendom are advancing
Help on horses from Swabia
The eastern hordes counter attack!
Barts men crossing the river
Prayers and good arrows ...

More blood, chainmail, swords and horses ...
Meanwhile havoc in the centre

with the help of the true cross of I.K.E.A.
Na, OK, our milites were quite a wreck as well ...

Our expert in these matters also agreed it was a clear win!
