  • I’ve read it but I mean everything he wrote is just kinda known to you already if you have even a passing interest in 19th century American history. It’s interesting seeing a foreign perspective but also I don’t know if you’re missing much. Like hey did you know Americans have a bunch of newspapers and also have a ton of competing churches and also rich people have a bunch of slaves and also native Americans are excluded from society.

  • The only thing I remember from that book is de Tocqueville says the only Americans who seem to care about national politics are either very rich or complete cranks. And he says the very rich ones have very petty, minor disagreements with one another because rich people live in little secluded mansions completely separated from normal society so their political concerns don’t seem to match what’s actually happening in the world. And despite all that, their disagreements are really bitter and aggressive. This book was written in 1835.

I think I remember something else where he talks about how politicians in America are less likely to do direct corruption, like clear cut bribery, and more likely to leverage their political power to gain connections and wealth, then when they transition to private life they retain those connections to both wealthy people and government power. Something like that? I read this book 20 years ago. Also he was very clear that America is lying about the freedom and liberty stuff because of slavery and the genocide of indigenous Americans.

  • Israeli propaganda is bad because it centers around the idea that wanting an enthno-state theocracy is a completely normal political aspiration while at the same time pretending the enthno-state also practices democratic pluralism. The Zionist authorities have become so enamored with the zionist project they either don’t know or don’t care what comes across as sensible to someone who lives thousands of miles away from Israel and perhaps has very little stake in encroaching settlements. Like the propaganda about how Hamas will take over the entire world and institute a global pogrom just doesn’t hit. No one believes that outside the most blinkered Zionist.

Furthermore the propaganda is laser directed at maybe three demographics, so it comes across as alien and hyperspecific if you don’t belong to their audience. Zionist propaganda is intended for: American Islamophobia liberals who aren’t Jewish, American reactionary evangelicals who believe the apocalypse is happening in two months, and young Jewish people living outside of Israel.

And none of those groups necessary share political or economic interests, the only thing that may tie them together is a bloodthirsty hatred of Muslims but even that’s a stretch and isn’t as unifying as Israel thinks it might be

  • I mean it’s gotta be hard for someone like Shapiro, whose target audience was extremely elderly confused people who think college is gonna make their grandkids come home with a xenogender. And that was his target audience 15 years ago. Those types are either dead or they’ve moved on to actually explicit fascism, not the goofy respectable good-boy neocon fascism that Shapiro peddles.

  • Yeah his numbers were always fluff but I think now either some revenue source dried up or maybe platforms figured out how to purge bots more efficiently. I also never believed he was actually one of the top podcasts for years somehow.

Furthermore the “wet ass p-word” thing made him into a joke among people who aren’t politically interested. That’s gonna be his actual legacy, saying wet ass p-word
